As a long-time Star Wars fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and disappointment upon learning about Leonardo DiCaprio‘s missed opportunity to join the galaxy far, far away. Having grown up watching the original trilogy and later binge-watching the prequels, the idea of one of my favorite actors playing Anakin Skywalker was a dream come true.
Over the past five decades, the “Star Wars” franchise has attracted an impressive roster of top-tier actors. Names like Bea Arthur, Liam Neeson, and Carl Weathers have left indelible marks on this galaxy. Many actors dream of being part of this cinematic universe, but not all get the chance. Gary Oldman and Leonardo DiCaprio are among those who missed out, with Oldman reportedly turning down an offer.
In 2010, DiCaprio had a conversation with Shortlist about his past opportunity to portray Anakin Skywalker in the “Star Wars” prequels. When asked about the rumors of him being in discussions for the part of the Chosen One, he confirmed, “Yes, I did have a meeting with George Lucas about it.” He went on to share why he decided against pursuing the role further. “I just didn’t feel prepared enough at that time,” DiCaprio stated. He referenced the same reason for passing on the role of Robin in “Batman Forever” (1995). It is not surprising, given his successful career, that DiCaprio has declined several significant roles.
Despite DiCap Leo showing no enthusiasm for portraying Anakin, his conversation with Lucas about it made Hayden Christensen fear he would be denied the opportunity to secure the desirable part.
DiCaprio’s talks made Christensen feel he had no shot at the Anakin role
Although Sebastian Shaw initially portrayed Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi,” most people would agree that Hayden Christensen truly brought the character to life in “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” His performances, once criticized, are now appreciated for their accuracy to Anakin’s transformation. As a result, his appearances in “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Ahsoka” on Disney+ were warmly welcomed. It’s intriguing then, that Christensen felt he had no shot at the role due to Leonardo DiCaprio’s encounter with George Lucas during casting.
When I found out that the role would go to someone else instead of me, my suspicion was confirmed, as I had convinced myself since the beginning of the auditioning process that I wouldn’t get the part. Unbeknownst to me, DiCaprio didn’t want it, and eventually, Lucasfilm selected me to portray Anakin. I felt incredibly fortunate and excited about the opportunity to bring George’s transformation from good to evil to life.
In summary, Anakin Skywalker’s role was brilliantly played by Hayden Christensen, and since then, Leo DiCaprio has thrived with numerous achievements outside of the “Star Wars” franchise.
