Surprisingly, NBC’s “The Irrational” is wrapping up Season 2 as per the 2025 TV schedule on March 25th. The charming duet of Jesse L. Martin and Karen David from the latest “Little Shop of Horrors”-themed episode won’t be repeated in the final episode of the season. Following Alec’s shocking discovery that Rose’s husband, who he had no prior knowledge of, is implicated in the upcoming issue to be resolved, showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman hinted at the high intensity we can expect in the finale.
In the final episode of Season 2 titled “The Exchange,” you’ll notice that Rose’s husband, Alec, plays a significant role. As depicted in the clip provided, he is enlisted to aid in an exchange involving prisoners. Interestingly, this mission holds personal significance for him because it involves a fellow worker who was unjustly incarcerated. (According to NBC)
As a passionate film lover, I can’t wait for you all to join me in unraveling the mysteries surrounding Rose and her mysterious man, who has remarkably been kept under wraps by Rose over the past two seasons. But, buckle up, folks! The arrival of Nick Sagar, known for his role in Queen of the South, promises to stir things up significantly for our beloved duo. With a shadowy past as a spy, his presence is sure to add an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative.
As for the finale, Arika Lisanne Mittman hinted to TopMob that the stakes are higher than ever before. I can hardly contain my excitement!
These final two episodes are quite significant, and we aimed to create a shift in mood between them. We’ve got an upbeat musical episode followed by a suspenseful and risky spy-like installment. However, I believe each episode offers its unique brand of enjoyment.
It’s worth noting that Jesse L. Martin returning to his “Rent” origins in the recent “The Flash” musical episode and Karen David drawing from her “Princess Isabella” character in “Galavant” for Episode 17 was quite a unique highlight compared to the surprising twist awaiting viewers in the live finale of “The Irrational,” airing this week at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Stream it the next day if you have a Peacock subscription. The showrunner hinted that the revelation about Alec discovering Rose had a husband before the finale will be quite a shocker.
Initially, we subtly hinted at a secret about Rose. At the start of the season, she tells him, “There’s a lot about me you don’t know,” and we strategically dropped that hint because we knew all along that Rose was married, but Karen wasn’t aware. [laughs] She even called me in excitement exclaiming, “Oh my god!” We had been pondering where to unveil this secret throughout the season, and we were having a blast with Rose and Alec, so we kept delaying it. Then we thought, “This musical theater episode is too good not to introduce conflict into their relationship.” It’ll be intriguing to see how they handle that new challenge in the finale.
In Season 2, it appeared as if Rose was concealing her husband from Alec, but Karen David was completely transparent! We hope that the appearance of this man connected to Rose’s past won’t signify the demise of her relationship with Alec and thus her departure from the show. However, a preview clip hints that he might have sought out Alec for aid rather than rekindling his connection with Rose. The circumstances surrounding their marriage remain unclear, leaving us questioning if it was or is or will be traditional in any way!
Given that Mittman was aware from the beginning that Rose’s spouse would be significant, how much of the plan for “The Irrational” was set in advance? It seems that the showrunner revealed that they had already mapped out Season 2 right from the start.
I, as a key contributor, help shape the narrative arcs for our characters. We discuss Alec’s storyline, Rose’s, Marisa’s, and more – mapping out where we want each character to start, progress, and end throughout the season. Time-wise, we also brainstorm the week-by-week cases, but our primary focus is on establishing the emotional journey for our characters across the season as a whole.
Given the intrigue surrounding espionage, personal connections, anticipated rewards, and fresh inquiries, what can we expect from Season 3? At present, The Irrational has not been officially confirmed for the 2025-2026 television season. However, this doesn’t automatically mean a dismal future for the series that welcomed back the former Law & Order actor to NBC, as the network has only renewed comedies like Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical thus far. If popular shows such as Law & Order: SVU and the trio of One Chicago are still in limbo, it doesn’t surprise me that The Irrational hasn’t heard anything yet.
Despite some lingering doubts about what lies ahead, was the Season 2 finale designed to serve as the final episode, or is there potential for more episodes in the future by being overly cautious? When I posed this query to Arika Lisanne Mittman, she hinted:
Indeed, you’ll notice that it’s been strategically arranged as our final episode for this season. When it comes to this series, we always maintain a positive outlook. We adore working on it, and we truly hope to continue doing so. In fact, we have been laying the groundwork for potential future installments.
It’s still uncertain if we’ll get a nail-biting ending, some lingering mysteries, or something in between, but the eagerness of fans to find out what transpires for Alec and Rose amidst her husband’s involvement is almost at an end. Don’t miss it on NBC next Tuesday, March 25 at 10 p.m. ET during the Season 2 finale of The Irrational. Catch up on earlier episodes of Jesse L. Martin’s series through Peacock.
