‘The Kings of Tupelo’ Directors on Weaving a Tale of Elvis Impersonators, Black Market Conspiracy Theories and War Crimes Into One Docuseries

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for true crime documentaries, I found “The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga” to be an engrossing ride through the twists and turns of this bizarre real-life tale. The filmmakers’ approach to embracing the grandiose storytelling style of the South added a unique flavor that kept me hooked till the end.

At first glance, “The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga” may appear to be a humorous mockumentary given its eccentric characters from a small Mississippi town. However, as the narrative unfolds, reality proves to be more bizarre than any fiction, following the tale of an Elvis impersonator transforming into an organ-trafficking informant, eventually implicated in an attempted assassination on former President Barack Obama.

Contrary to the heavy accusations that form the basis of the three-part Netflix docuseries, it turned out to be simpler than anticipated to prompt discussions about the 2013 rice scandal, during which several government officials received letters containing a harmful biochemical substance. The years preceding this event also saw increased willingness for people to speak up.

During a panel at Soho House in Los Angeles on Dec 10, Chapman expressed, “Everyone was exclaiming, ‘Wow, this is an extraordinary tale! You simply must meet Bob, and it turns out that Bob used to be in a band with Kevin,'” he said. Initially, I anticipated challenges in getting people to discuss this topic. However, the response surprised me; everyone seemed eager to share their stories. It didn’t take long for us to realize that there are exceptional storytellers residing in the South – truly gifted narrators.

As a filmmaker, we’re essentially tied to our subjects because we can’t write the scenes or use actors, explained Chapman. Witnessing their innate talent for storytelling and humor left us incredibly thrilled.

The narrative primarily revolves around Paul Kevin Curtis, a past Elvis tribute artist, whose bond with his brother Jack, another Elvis impersonator, deteriorated due to Paul’s accusations that the North Mississippi Medical Center was illicitly selling organs on the black market, an allegation he made while working as a cleaner there.

Spending extended periods with Kevin and his family reveals his strong belief that he’s accomplishing something extraordinary. He sees himself as the central character in this tale, one where things are clear-cut – right versus wrong – and he stands on the side of justice,” Chapman noted after spending 32 hours interviewing the conspiracy theorist who was later charged with an attempt to assassinate Obama. This new detail adds another layer to an already intricate narrative.

Maclain described their approach to filmmaking as creating “essentially two distinct narratives.” The initial segments focus primarily on Paul Kevin Curtis’ tale, while the concluding portion brings in another character significantly, who contributes his part to the overall narrative.

As a gamer weaving my own tales, surrounded by countless narratives vying for authenticity, I chose to emulate the epic storytelling style native to the South. This traditional flair became my compass, shaping the narrative that unfolded before me.

Chapman admitted that we wouldn’t be able to verify any of this information, so instead, we decided to fully embrace it. This approach is rooted in their culture and their narrative style, and I believe that what doesn’t occur becomes a significant element in the emotional build-up of the story as episodes two and three progress.

He emphasized that we’ve often positioned ourselves as more of an exploratory rather than an investigative filmmakers. This project, in particular, focuses on the impact of Kevin’s story on his family, his kids, and his friends.

This edition of THR Frontrunners is sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.
