Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for the Season 2 finale of The Last of Us
The second season of HBO’s hit series “The Last of Us” recently concluded, and fans are already eager for a return to the post-apocalyptic setting. The suspenseful ending left many questions about the protagonists’ survival, while still adhering closely to the original game’s storyline. However, some significant alterations were introduced in the season finale, such as one particularly brutal kill by Ellie that is notable within the video game series.
At a press conference where ComicBook.com was present, showrunner Craig Mazin of The Last of Us discussed changes made to the scene where Ellie (Bella Ramsey) encounters Mel (Ariela Barer) and Owen (Spencer Lord) at the aquarium. In the game The Last of Us Part II, Ellie kills a German Shepherd dog belonging to Abby’s group, followed by killing Owen and Mel in the subsequent scene. However, this sequence was left out from the HBO adaptation due to its potential intensity and discomfort when portrayed in live-action.
In the game, upon Ellie’s entrance into the aquarium, a stray dog launches an attack on her, leading Ellie to kill it. This dog is not familiar to us. Moving forward, I won’t delve into subsequent events since they pertain to future seasons, but let me say that this scene and others like it are filled with harrowing incidents. Moreover, due to the live-action format, the violence portrayed becomes strikingly graphic as it involves real people instead of animations, creating a distressing atmosphere. We were aware that Mel’s fate, Owen’s, and Ellie’s recent encounter would all be unsettling events.
More to come.
