In the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2, we delve deeper into the intricate relationship between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), offering insights into their past and the strains that affected their bond. Contrary to the source game, this episode showcases a different timeline for their reconnection, hinting at a divergent ending for the HBO series adaptation.
During a chat with Variety, Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, spoke about incorporating the Joel and Ellie porch scene in the second last episode of Season 2 instead of the final game sequence where they talk at Joel’s house. When asked if this would impact the series finale, Druckmann affirmed it by saying, “Indeed.” He went on to explain that moving the porch scene forward by an entire season or two was a deliberate choice in the storytelling process.
In creating the game, I had a feeling that particular scene needed to be included, though I wasn’t sure where it should fit. This applied to all the flashback scenes. Right up until the end of production, we were adjusting the placement of these flashbacks. While discussing this with Craig, it was the first time I truly considered the gap between seasons. A lot of writing is about setting up events that pay off later, and we had established certain things that would be resolved years down the line. Waiting that long, especially since this season heavily emphasizes Ellie’s journey and her emotional truth, seemed too prolonged, given the uncertain timeline for Seasons 3 or even 4. Craig persuaded me quite effectively that such a delay wouldn’t work well.
We spent the day discussing it thoroughly, trying to understand its impact. When a new idea comes up, I suggest we imagine how it would play out. We consider both current and future scenarios, then ask if it makes sense. If yes, we implement it. If not, we keep thinking until we find another solution, or revert back to the original plan in the game.
More to come.
