HBO’s highly praised drama show, “The Last of Us,” is set to come back with fresh episodes, continuing the story from its Emmy-winning premiere season in 2023.
For the second time around, Pedro Pascal (as Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) lead the cast as survivors of an apocalypse caused by a devastating plague that left few humans alive. However, there are several alterations for season 2: Fresh directors take charge, different source content is being used, the season will be shorter in length, and numerous new actors have joined the expansive roster of characters in this post-apocalyptic drama.
Developed by writers Craig Mazin, famously known for his work on “Chernobyl”, and Neil Druckmann, who was instrumental in the production of the PlayStation game upon which this series is based, the second season promises to put Joel and Ellie, as well as their bond, through fresh and demanding trials.
Below is a rundown of everything you need to know about the second season — without any spoilers.
When Will Season 2 Be Released?
The second season of “The Last of Us” premieres on Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. E.T., airing both on HBO and their streaming platform, HBO Max. The new season will be divided into seven episodes, with a fresh episode released each week. This is a shorter run compared to the first season’s nine episodes.
Who Is the Cast for Season 2?
A significant number of characters from the first season did not make it through. For the second season, Pascal, Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley are reprising their roles as Joel, Ellie, Tommy, and Maria respectively.
In the fresh lineup of actors for this show, you’ll find Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, a young actor known as Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez, and Jeffrey Wright. Additionally, Catherine O’Hara will make special appearances.
What Characters Are the New Cast Playing?
Kaitlyn Dever from “Booksmart” portrays Abby, a solider on a mission for revenge for someone dear to her heart. Isabela Merced embodies Dina, a carefree spirit with a strong connection to Ellie. Jeffrey Wright known for “Westworld” plays Isaac, the commander of a militia faction. Young Mazino recognized in “Beef” is depicted as Jesse, the patrol leader within the Jackson survivor community. Ariela Barer famous for “Marvel’s Runaways” represents Mel, a physician grappling with the harsh realities of war. Tati Gabrielle well-known from “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is Nora, a military medic. Spencer Lord hailing from “Riverdale” appears as Owen, a member of Abby’s group. Danny Ramirez, star of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” takes on the role of Manny, a dedicated soldier who also belongs to Abby’s group. Catherine O’Hara, celebrated in “Schitt’s Creek”, makes a guest appearance as Joel’s therapist within Jackson.
Did you know that at one point, Dever was being considered for the role of Ellie in the early stages of The Last of Us movie development? As Mazin stated, “Kaitlyn was very much a part of The Last of Us’s DNA.” However, when the TV series came around, she no longer appeared to be the right age for the character. According to the creators, they prefer to have conversations with actors and ensure that they are willing to put in the effort required for such a challenging project. Dever is an exceptional actress, and her enthusiasm for the role was evident.
Is There A Trailer?
Yup, two, in fact. The latest is a pretty intense and action-packed look at the season, below.
Ramsey hints that Joel and Ellie’s bond has shifted slightly, alluding to underlying issues between them. This is suggested by a scene in the trailer where Ellie reprimands Joel with, “You swore…,” a reference to his promise at the end of the first season about the truth of what happened at the Fireflies lab. Ramsey explains that Ellie has harbored doubts about this throughout their journey, which sets the stage for their dynamic in the upcoming story. They are not particularly friendly, and Ellie seems melancholic, but there’s a complex depth to their friendship.
What Have the Creators Said About the New Episodes?
Five years later since the events in the initial season, Joel and Ellie find themselves at odds with one another and navigating a world that has become even more perilous and volatile than the one they previously knew.
Mazin mentioned that “development” or “progression” is a significant aspect of the current season, with various forms of the infected being displayed. He further explained, “Much of what’s unfolding in the season revolves around growth and transformation. Ellie is maturing, and she is undergoing change. The town of Jackson is also evolving, expanding, and accepting refugees. Meanwhile, the world beyond is experiencing its own alterations.
Druckmann commented on the blend of action and narrative in the season, stating, “To us, everything is about drama – even our action scenes are dramatic moments. In the first season, we were careful with the moments we highlighted because we weren’t entirely sure of our direction. Now, we have a clear vision. We’ve gone all out with some parts of it. There are very intense scenes that aren’t even shown in the trailer. People often ask if season two is improved. I usually reply, ‘It’s more outrageous.’
Wait, What Happened at the End of Season One Again?
After two years, it’s time for a reminder: Joel and Ellie have been traversing the country, evading FEDRA, a controlling military force that manages quarantined zones. They stumble upon a clandestine lab operated by the Fireflies, a resistance group against FEDRA. The doctors in this lab claim they can create a cure for the plague using Ellie’s unique immunity, but there’s a condition: the treatment would cost Ellie her life. Tormented by the loss of his own daughter, Joel resorts to slaying the Firefly soldiers and the surgeon, making off with an unconscious Ellie. Later, Joel deceives Ellie, telling her that the Fireflies found other immune individuals too and couldn’t develop a cure. The duo then treks towards Jackson, a thriving community of survivors situated in Wyoming.
What Are the Different Types of ‘Last of Us’ Zombies?
As a fervent enthusiast, I’d like to clarify that they aren’t merely referred to as zombies, but rather the Infected. However, in common lingo, the Z-word is often used. This pandemic is triggered by a Cordyceps fungus, which has now expanded its host range from insects to humans, possibly due to global warming altering the fungus. The virus can be transmitted through spores from a deceased body or a bite from an Infected individual. There exists a variety of types among the Infected population.
“Quick Runners” refer to recently infected individuals who are renowned for their swiftness. “Stealthy Stalkers,” on the other hand, have been infected for up to a year. They lurk in the shadows and stalk their victims under cover of darkness, sometimes even clinging to walls. “Clicking Infecteds” have been infected for at least a year, and they exhibit split open faces with fungal growth crowning them, making a distinct clicking noise. “Long-Term Bloaters,” who have been infected for several years, are blind but possess immense strength and sport armor plating. Lastly, “Water Shamblers” are typically found in bodies of water and are known for their ability to emit clouds of spores that can burn their prey upon contact.
As a dedicated fan, I’m excitedly anticipating the arrival of fresh characters in the upcoming season! Mazin, our creative mind behind this captivating series, emphasized that we should expect an evolution. He stated, “It was crucial for us to keep pushing the storyline forward with the infected, not just by adding more, but by introducing something meaningful that aligns with the narrative, to prevent them from becoming mere non-player characters.
How Many Seasons of ‘The Last of Us’ Will There Be?
Initially, the first season of “The Last of Us” was adapted from the original video game launched in 2013. Subsequent seasons, however, are derived from the sequel to that game, “The Last of Us Part II,” which hit the shelves in 2020 and featured a longer, more complex (and somewhat contentious) plotline. The showrunners have indicated that the series’ story will not go beyond what is presented in the games, and it seems that the development of a “Part III” game might not be happening. Consequently, the HBO series “The Last of Us” may span over three or four seasons, with the fourth season being more probable.
In the previous year, Mazin shared with Deadline: “There’s one thing I’m certain about: it’s hard to imagine how we could continue the story beyond what we’ve shown in season two in just another season. It seems likely that, provided viewers keep tuning in and we can produce more TV content, season three will be expansive. The narrative might even necessitate season four.
When Will ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Be Released? And, What About a Spinoff?
Although an official announcement for the third season of “The Last of Us” hasn’t been made, rest assured that the show isn’t getting cancelled. Given that the second season took two years to produce, it’s reasonable to assume that the third season will also take a similar amount of time or longer. Therefore, you can anticipate the third season of “The Last of Us” sometime in late 2026 at the earliest, but more realistically during the first half of 2027. As for any spinoffs, there’s currently no information available on that front.
