As a dedicated gamer and avid reader with a deep appreciation for both film and literature, I’ve been eagerly following the latest developments in the world of Stephen King adaptations. Prior to last year, Mark Hamill’s connection to the esteemed author was minimal at best – an uncredited role in Mick Garris’ “Sleepwalkers” back in 1992. Fast forward to 2023, and Hamill is now a part of not one but two Stephen King projects!
Before last year, Mark Hamill had only a small involvement in Stephen King’s films. In 1992, he appeared in an uncredited role in Mick Garris’ “Sleepwalkers,” which was based on an original screenplay by King. Until then, that was the extent of his connection to the author. However, in 2023, Hamill joined the cast of Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of “The Life Of Chuck.” Now, it seems Hamill is on a roll with Stephen King projects as he is also set to star in the new film “The Long Walk.”
Francis Lawrence directs “The Long Walk,” a new production starting this week in Manitoba, Canada. Written by JT Mollner, the upcoming film also features Mark Hamill and Judy Greer on board. Though roles aren’t officially announced, considering the scarcity of adult characters in the source material, it seems plausible that Greer takes on the role of Mrs. Garraty (Ray Garraty’s mother) and Hamill portrays The Major (the antagonist overseeing the competition).
According to the title’s source, which Stephen King wrote under the alias Richard Bachman, the narrative revolves around a group of adolescent boys who have joined The Long Walk: an extreme endurance challenge. In this competition, only one survivor reaches the end and reaps the reward of their dreams. The event commences with no rest allowed for the participants; they must keep walking at a steady pace along a highway. Any indication of slacking or halting results in a warning, and receiving three warnings or attempting to flee leads to execution.
Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson were the initial actors to join the cast of “The Long Walk” for leading roles. However, since their announcements in June, the film has gained several more prominent additions. Alongside Mark Hamill and Judy Greer, the movie will also include Roman Griffin Davis from “Jojo Rabbit,” Charlie Plummer from “Spontaneous,” Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, and Joshua Odjick (as reported in this week’s edition of The King Beat).
Mark Hamill has been keeping busy with more than just his forthcoming Stephen King projects. Lately, he has taken on several voice acting roles. He is set to reprise his iconic character as The Joker in “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part Three,” and will also lend his voice to a character named Thorn in the upcoming animated film “The Wild Robot.” This movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 27.
Judy Greer has acted in a Stephen King adaptation before, as she portrayed gym teacher Ms. Desjardin in the 2013 remake of “Carrie.” Following “The Long Walk,” her upcoming projects consist of the heartwarming Christmas comedy “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” (scheduled for release on November 8).
Previously, efforts to bring “The Long Walk” to life on the big screen faced long delays in production (George A. Romero initiated these attempts back in the late 1980s). Now, however, the film is moving forward with Lionsgate and is expected to become a reality. No official release date has been announced yet, but keep an eye on TopMob for all the latest news regarding this intriguing Stephen King adaptation.
