As a lifelong fan who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth’s rich tapestry, I can confidently say that the trailer for “The War of the Rohirrim” is a breath of fresh air. The fusion of the iconic trilogy with a new anime format promises to deliver an exhilarating experience that harks back to the magic of Peter Jackson’s original masterpiece, while introducing us to uncharted territories within Middle-earth’s complex politics.
2024 has been a bustling year so far for Middle-earth. The summer saw the long-anticipated premiere of Season 2 for “The Rings of Power”, and earlier in the year, Warner Bros. confirmed the production of a Gollum film. The pace is set to quicken as the year progresses, with the studio’s much-awaited anime “The War of the Rohirrim” slated for release in December. Not only that, but an official trailer for this movie has been unveiled as well.
On August 22nd, Warner Bros. revealed a nearly 2.5 minute trailer for their upcoming anime project. So far, the general public has only seen a handful of still images, but there was definitely more to show than that. As early as June 2023, attendees at the Annecy International Film Festival in France were given a sneak peek of unfinished footage, which reportedly captured the enchantment similar to Peter Jackson’s initial trilogy. A year later, an impressive 20 minutes of this footage was screened again at the same festival. Additionally, it was made known that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh would serve as executive producers, joining Middle-earth veteran Philippa Boyens who had already been announced as a producer for the project.
Just as Gandalf might put it, the stage seems undeniably set, and now events are unfolding. With the unveiling of the trailer, the film has stepped out from its secluded sanctum, revealing enticing footage that leaves us salivating in anticipation as we draw nearer to the release date on December 13.
What is the trailer about?
One aspect that stands out in the trailer is Warner Bros.’ clear indication that this film is a direct prequel to Peter Jackson’s legendary trilogy. Although there’s a switch from live-action to anime, this movie takes place in the same world as Jackson’s films. This point is significant because unlike other series such as “The Rings of Power,” this production shares continuity with Jackson’s adaptation and can directly connect to it.
Instead of starting fresh, the teaser for “The War of the Rohirrim” commences with scenes from “The Two Towers,” featuring notable characters such as Ian McKellen’s Gandalf and Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn. It also showcases Miranda Otto’s Éowyn, a key figure returning to her role. These live-action sequences are followed by the shift into an anime format.
Additionally, you’ll notice a card reading “Peter Jackson Presents” during Howard Shore’s iconic soundtrack, indicating that this isn’t a solo film but is connected to the broader Warner Bros. Middle-earth universe. The narrative then unfolds, offering a fresh perspective on Middle-earth politics. Unlike the usual unification against a Dark Lord, here we witness various families competing for power, reminiscent of “Game of Thrones.”
In this captivating tale, the main players in the intense political and military turmoil are the regal House of Rohan, headed by Helm Hammerhand, with his daughter Héra playing a significant role as well. On the opposite side, we have a group of dissatisfied Dunlendings, led by Wulf, their northern neighbors of Rohan, who harbors bitterness and seeks revenge. From palace conspiracies to breathtaking battle scenes that only Middle-earth can deliver – featuring colossal creatures like the mumakil – this trailer is overflowing with a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously promising to lead Middle-earth viewers into uncharted territories.
