The Mandalorian And Grogu Movie Won’t Include A Fan Favorite Character, And I’m So Bummed

As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with memories of Boba Fett’s captivating debut etched deep within my childhood, I must confess that hearing about his absence from the upcoming “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has left me feeling like a Sarlacc pit had swallowed my favorite bounty hunter once more.

In essence, the storyline continuity of Star Wars, particularly The Mandalorian Season 2, officially confirmed that Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc pit after Return of the Jedi. This marked the return of Temuera Morrison to live-action as Boba Fett, a role he previously played in the Prequel Trilogy era, nearly two decades ago. Following The Mandalorian Season 2’s conclusion, a spinoff series titled The Book of Boba Fett was produced. Regrettably, fans hoping for a Boba Fett appearance in the upcoming 2026 movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, will likely be disappointed as reports suggest he won’t reappear in this film.

Morrison disclosed this detail in a conversation with ScreenRant, specifically at FAN EXPO Chicago, during the “From Clone Troopers to Bounty Hunters” discussion. To quote him directly:

To tell you the truth, I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed, hoping for that long-awaited call. Seems like we’ve been temporarily tucked away for now. But hey, who knows? Maybe they’ll pull us out from storage sometime down the line.

In July, filming for The Mandalorian with Grogu commenced. If you were among those who were enthusiastic about Temuera Morrison’s statement and hoped that Boba Fett could be incorporated into the script, I regret to inform you that this won’t happen. It’s unfortunate, but Boba Fett and Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, would not appear together in future installments. Despite their initial disagreements, they formed an efficient team, with Boba assisting Din in rescuing Grogu from Moff Gideon during Season 2’s finale and later seeking Din’s aid in battling the Pike Syndicate on Tatooine in The Book of Boba Fett. It would have been exciting to see these characters reunite for a third time on screen, but alas, it seems that fate has other plans.

It’s plausible that Boba Fett isn’t appearing in The Mandalorian due to the writers, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, not needing him for their current narrative. However, I can’t help but speculate if the poor performance of The Book of Boba Fett might have influenced this choice. Our Star Wars TV shows rank it last, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 66% Tomatometer and 49% Audience Score. Temuera Morrison’s comment about his character being “on the shelf” could hint that Disney and Lucasfilm might prefer to keep Boba Fett low-key for now, at least temporarily.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has been following the saga since I was just a kid, I have to say that I am genuinely excited about the prospect of seeing Boba Fett return to our screens once more. I remember watching The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980 and being completely captivated by this mysterious bounty hunter with the distinctive Mandalorian armor. Even though his debut in The Star Wars Holiday Special was less than impressive, Boba Fett quickly became one of my favorite characters.

With a Disney+ subscription, you’re able to stream “The Book of Boba Fett,” “The Mandalorian,” and all other “Star Wars” series. The upcoming show, “Skeleton Crew,” is set to air on December 3, 2024, according to the TV schedule. Additionally, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.
