At the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan, Lucasfilm and Disney revealed a glimpse of an upcoming film called “The Mandalorian & Grogu“, which is derived from their popular TV series on Disney+ called “The Mandalorian“.

In the intensely active video sequence, viewers watch as stormtroopers get ready for combat inside an AT-AT walker. Suddenly, The Mandalorian swoops in and manages to eliminate more than a dozen of them, eventually making it to the cockpit where he destroys the vehicle.

In the fast-paced video footage, viewers witness stormtroopers readying for battle inside an AT-AT. All of a sudden, The Mandalorian appears and eliminates over a dozen of them before eventually reaching and destroying the cockpit of the walker.

Next, Sigourney Weaver’s enigmatic character engages Mando and Grogu, inquiring about Mando’s employment status. Subsequently, a series of elaborate fight sequences unfold, featuring Grogu displaying his powers at one point. The final moments hint at Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt: The young heir to Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire, triumphantly raising his hands in a fighting arena.

In this rendition, Jon Favreau, the brain behind “The Mandalorian,” takes on both the director’s role and collaborates with Dave Filoni in scriptwriting for the project, who is responsible for the “Ahsoka” series.

As a dedicated admirer, I found myself in awe as Pedro Pascal, Weaver, and the talented Favreau graced the stage together. The moment was even more breathtaking when they introduced some astonishingly lifelike animatronic BDX Droids to the audience.

Favreau spoke about the significance of holding this event in Japan.

Reflecting on the genesis of Star Wars, it’s undeniable how deeply rooted it is in Japanese cinema, their culture, and heritage. The inspiration for this epic saga was clearly drawn from the visionary filmmakers of Japan. Returning here now, it feels like a warm, heartfelt welcome back home.

Reflecting on his early days with the franchise, Pascal recalls his initial creative gathering about the project, particularly the first time he sat down with Jon and Dave in the writers’ room. “I’ll never forget the first day I was given, floor-to-ceiling story sketches of the first season of The Mandalorian, not knowing my role yet. What stood out to me were the most stunning visual storyboards I had ever seen, and I knew that people would be blown away.

Weaver started off her movie experience with a video call with Favreau, which was followed by the directors, Filoni, assigning her some tasks: to catch up on the TV series.

As I watched, I became smitten with every character, yet there was one man in particular who captured my affection,” she expressed, gently touching Pascal’s shoulder. “There’s another person who won my heart too. Allow me to mention it, of course. Oh yes, Grogu has claimed a place in mine. Intriguingly enough, I met him just now in the green room. He seems a bit anxious, but I think he’d enjoy joining us.

A diminutive robot version of Grogu, greeted with thunderous applause, shyly waved at the audience.

We don’t have a definite date yet for when the footage will be made available online, but since Star Wars Celebration is set to air on ABC’s Good Morning America this coming Friday, there’s a chance that they might release it during their broadcast. If that happens, we’ll immediately update this post with the footage, so remember to check back regularly for updates.

The upcoming series titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu” represents the initial significant screen appearance of the franchise since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker“. It is anticipated to feature characters from other Disney+ “Star Wars” series, like “Ahsoka” and those from “Star Wars: Rebels“.

The project showcases an intriguing shift in Disney’s approach towards their franchise, as they demonstrated that Star Wars narratives can effectively expand onto small-screen platforms with the debut of The Mandalorian in 2019. However, it raises a question: could this strategy be reversed, transferring TV storylines to the big screen for cinematic releases?

Once more, Pascal steps back into the character of Din Djarin, the masked Mandalorian adventurer, journeying through the cosmos accompanied by his lovable Jedi-endowed charge, Grogu, affectionately recognized across many galaxies as Baby Yoda.

The cast also Jonny Coyne as an Imperial warlord. The rest of the cast has been kept under wraps.

Initially, Favreau and Filoni had begun work on season 4 of The Mandalorian, but it was put on hold due to the Hollywood strikes. During this time, Disney chose to go ahead with a Mandalorian movie instead, announcing the project in January 2024.

Or simply:

The initial work for season 4 of The Mandalorian was halted due to Hollywood strikes. Instead, Disney decided to make a Mandalorian film and announced the project in January 2024.

There’s been little public comment from Favreau or Filoni about the film. However, at D23 last year, Favreau mentioned on the red carpet, “It’s a pleasure to reunite and have the grandeur of the big screen to narrate a fresh story featuring characters our audience is already familiar with, in a new adventure that… Our aim is to delight those who’ve followed the show since its beginning, as well as Star Wars enthusiasts from the start. Since we’re on the big screen now, it offers us the chance to attract a whole new audience with a brand-new story and undoubtedly Grogu – everyone, especially kids, knows who that is. This is an opportunity for them to visit the theater.

The trailer unveils as Disney+ gears up for the launch of season 2 of their much-awaited Star Wars series, “Andor,” set to premiere on April 22. Other upcoming Star Wars productions include a film by the director of Ford v Ferrari, James Mangold, titled Dawn of the Jedi, a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg who is known for his work in the X-Men franchise, and an unnamed standalone Star Wars project led by Shawn Levy, who has previously directed Deadpool and Wolverine.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released on May 22, 2026.
