The Matlock Premiere Was Awesome. Why Do We Have To Wait So Long For Episode 2?

As a seasoned gamer of life and TV series, I must say that the anticipation for the Matlock reboot has been a rollercoaster ride. From the initial delay to the unexpected premiere sneak peek, it’s been quite the journey. But as someone who remembers the original Matlock with fondness, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and impatience at the prospect of diving back into the world of Matty Roberts, now played by the inimitable Kathy Bates.

The much-anticipated comeback of the popular series “Matlock” was scheduled for TV screens in 2024, and the introduction of Kathy Bates as the leading attorney took fans by surprise with its intricate plot twists. Despite being delayed from its originally planned premiere on the 2023-24 schedule due to Hollywood strikes, the show eventually made it to our screens, but viewers must endure a bit more waiting for the second episode to air.

The initial airing of the show “Matlock” on September 22 was merely a preliminary preview. The actual return of the series won’t happen until CBS’ delayed premiere week, starting from Indigenous Peoples Day, October 13. This is when the prequel of “NCIS: Origins” will debut. Later in the same week, on Thursday, October 17 at 9 p.m. ET, “Matlock” will have its official time slot premiere, followed by the Season 2 premiere of “Elsbeth”.

Although the wait might seem prolonged, there will be additional showings of the debut episode, which attracted 7.73 million viewers on its original air date, as reported by Forbes. This number has since grown to 10.67 million viewers. The initial episode is set to re-air on Tuesday, October 8 and Thursday, October 10, both at 9 p.m. ET. It would be beneficial for those who haven’t seen Matlock yet to catch the sneak peek, as the last few minutes of the episode contain a major twist.

Spoilers for those who haven’t yet watched!

In the first episode of Matlock, it became clear that Kathy Bates’ character, Matty, was merely pretending to be a harmless old lady at work. Upon returning home, she found herself in a mansion, warmly greeted by her husband and affectionate grandson, who had created a false LinkedIn profile for her. The reason she obtained the job was due to a lawyer concealing papers that could have removed opioids from circulation, potentially preventing the death of Matty’s daughter.

Understanding this twist makes it even more challenging to accept the gap between the initial and second episodes. Nevertheless, it’s logical reasoning. Fans had been eagerly anticipating Matlock, so maybe providing the premiere episode ahead of schedule allows viewers to gauge what they’re in for. Similarly, CBS is following a similar approach with their new competition series The Summit. Since their debut week is later than other networks, it could be that they wanted to release some new shows first to keep viewers engaged.

With Matlock’s successful premiere, it opens up an opportunity for those undecided to catch a glimpse. Given Bates’ hopes for multiple seasons, this may not be far from reality. Furthermore, she intends to retire once the series concludes, so let’s cross our fingers for its longevity and growing audience.

Don’t miss out on Episode 2 of Matlock, airing on Thursday, October 17th at 9 p.m. ET on CBS! Based on the sneak peek alone, it promises to be an exceptional episode. The show has already shown signs of being something truly unique, and we can’t wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds. If you haven’t seen the first episode yet, you can catch up with a Paramount+ subscription right now!
