It seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is undergoing a significant transformation! The introduction of new characters and the integration of old ones are causing quite a stir among fans.

Characters in Marvel Comics, and consequently their films, are often brought back after they’ve been killed. However, this practice varies depending on the specific arc within Marvel Comics Universe (MCU). For instance, The Avengers could encounter Thanos through time travel, or Phil Coulson could be MacGyvered again by the S.H.I.E.L.D. team

This isn’t to say that the saga hasn’t been interesting or necessary, even. When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, characters like Deadpool and Wolverine had to be brought into the fold somehow… and what better way to do that than by cementing the concept of multiple universes? However, at this point, it has undeniably spiraled out of control. There are more setups than films and TV shows to resolve them, as evidenced recently by Kit Harington (Dane Whitman/the future Black Knight in Eternals), who confirmed that there are no plans in place to revisit his character. Not to mention, there is so much sheer quantity of media to keep up with now that Marvel has become inaccessible to even the diehard fans. Fortunately, this dilemma will likely get resolved in one fell swoop in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Rumor Regarding the Future of the MCU

A surprising revelation was shared on “The Watch” podcast (via Screen Rant) by Joanna Robinson, who co-authored the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. She asserted that she has a quote from Kevin Feige suggesting that Avengers: Secret Wars will function as a soft reboot for the franchise. Essentially, this film would wipe the slate clean in terms of continuity and wrap up the multiverse, setting the stage for new, high-stakes storylines once more. Screen Rant provides a passage from the book that reinforces this statement. It goes:

understanding the periodic need for superheroes to be rebooted, grasping the necessity of stop variants and spinoffs, comprehending the annual mega-crossover event’s ability to unify disparate characters

It seems that in the “Avengers: Secret Wars” comic, the characters experienced a collision of realities across the multiverse. The story showcases the destruction of aspects from the Ultimate universe (Miles Morales and co.), with a merging of Earth-616 into this one. So, despite Feige’s intentions being set aside, the narrative contains a manual reboot

Here’s a possible breakdown:

In the first and second seasons of Loki, along with the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, there was extensive development of Kang as the main antagonist. However, after Jonathan Majors was let go by the studio, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine (set following Loki Season 2) marks the first significant Marvel production where the TVA doesn’t seem to be actively pursuing variants of the character, at least not as a top priority. This might suggest that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shifted focus away from Kang rather than replacing him, a decision that, though logical, has left fans bewildered and confused

Here’s a possible rephrasing:

Could Robert Downey Jr. Be Involved?

As a devoted fan, it’s hard not to think about who among Earth-616’s characters could be significant enough to be an Anchor Being. Naturally, my mind leapt to Tony Stark, played by the brilliant Robert Downey Jr., in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But considering the regulations set by Deadpool and Wolverine, this theory might not hold water. The Loki series hinted that the events of Avengers: Endgame were predestined, suggesting Tony Stark’s demise was inevitable. Yet, there’s exciting news – Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, but this time as the sinister Doctor Doom. This could potentially serve as a replacement for Majors as the new antagonist for the Avengers

It’s intriguing to watch how the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will connect all its standalone storylines; from the mystical realm with Doctor Strange and witches, the cosmic universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, the urban setting with Spider-Man and Daredevil. Notably, The Fantastic Four and X-Men have yet to make a full appearance in their own series! If the soft reboot doesn’t consolidate these separate narratives, it should at least establish distinct sub-series for them, postponing large team-up events temporarily. You can stream the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+.
