The MCU X-Men Movie: What We Know So Far

As someone who grew up watching the X-Men movies and comics, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia mixed with excitement about the potential return of my favorite mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Having witnessed the evolution of these characters from their big screen debut in 2000 to the most recent films, it’s clear that they hold a special place in the hearts of many fans like myself.

It’s expected that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon introduce its unique take on the X-Men, as Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 has made it possible for these characters to be integrated into the main storyline for the first time. Besides The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a full-fledged X-Men movie within the Marvel timeline is likely to appear in upcoming films.

At the current point in the storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men and mutants, there’s a blend of facts we have established and mysteries yet to be revealed. As we anticipate more clarity, we’ve assembled this comprehensive guide. We’ll keep refining this resource as events unfold and fresh insights are shared, but for the time being, here’s what we currently understand about the upcoming X-Men film in the MCU.

The MCU X-Men Movie Release Date

Currently, there’s no scheduled X-Men film on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s release calendar. Over the next six years, until summer 2027, only six movies are confirmed for theater release, with no definite hint of a new MCU X-Men movie within that period. For now, these upcoming films consist of:

  • Captain America: Brave New World in February 2025
  • Thunderbolts* in May 2025
  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025
  • Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026
  • Untitled Spider-Man 4 in July 2026
  • Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027

As a diehard gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the future of Marvel’s mutant universe! Though we’re still waiting for the live-action MCU X-Men, there are some fantastic TV shows on the horizon. First up is the climactic finale of “What If…?” and then we’ve got new seasons of the nostalgic “X-Men ’97” series to look forward to!

The MCU X-Men Movie Director

As of now, the idea for a new X-Men movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is more like a concept behind the scenes than an officially confirmed project. So, it’s not surprising to hear that there isn’t a director yet assigned to bring this film to life. While some unverified online chatter hints at Jordan Peele discussing potential ideas with Marvel Studios, neither side has verified whether such a meeting took place or if the topic was about introducing mutants into the MCU.

Due to the limited information available on how Marvel Studios plans to introduce X-Men into the MCU, it’s difficult to predict who will direct the first film. They might choose established visionary directors for this significant task, or they could entrust it to a promising newcomer like Jon Watts, who made Spider-Man: Homecoming as his third movie, or Matt Shakman, who will be directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which will be his second film.

X-Men Characters We Have Seen In Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies

As of 2024, the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe (referred to as Earth-616) has yet to be ruled by any X-Men characters; however, this doesn’t mean that no X-Men characters have made an appearance in MCU movies. Some extraordinary heroes have crossed over into the franchise due to their universe-traveling abilities in recent films.

Professor X

In the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the main character, Doctor Strange, is escorted to Earth-838 by America Chavez. During his stay, he presents a case before a formidable assembly known as the Illuminati. Among this influential group is Professor Charles Xavier, portrayed by Patrick Stewart. However, in a fierce psychic confrontation with the Scarlet Witch, Xavier meets an unfortunate end when she breaks his neck.

Beast

Following Monica Rambeau’s trapping in an alternate dimension at the conclusion of The Marvels, she finds herself awakening in a hospital bed, taken aback to find her mother before her – however, it’s the post-credits scene that truly thrills Marvel aficionados as it showcases the comeback of Dr. Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in his complete blue and furry form (and the return of Kelsey Grammer’s voice, who previously portrayed the character in X-Men: The Last Stand)).

Deadpool

In this context, we’re stretching the boundaries of what constitutes an “X-Men character,” given that Deadpool isn’t traditionally associated with the mutant team, but he has had connections to them, so he is included. Wade Wilson, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, momentarily visits Earth-616 at the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine, but the story primarily unfolds in the X-Men universe (also known as Earth-10005) and a desolate realm called The Void.

Wolverine

Hugh Jackman reappeared as Logan, also known as Wolverine, in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine“. However, it remains unclear whether he’ll continue playing this character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite Deadpool’s repeated assertions in the film that Marvel will keep Jackman playing the part until he reaches 90 years old, this hasn’t been confirmed. By the end of the movie, Wolverine was seen leaving for Earth-10005, and it’s uncertain if he’ll ever make it to Earth-616.

Gambit

For quite a long time, Channing Tatum worked diligently on creating a standalone Gambit movie, but that project unfortunately never took off. However, he ultimately got the opportunity to portray the character in Deadpool and Wolverine. In this storyline, these two anti-heroes encounter the card-slinging Cajun while they are both trapped in the Void. Together with other Marvel characters who didn’t quite make it to the big screen, they join forces with Gambit in an attempt to vanquish Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova.

Existing Mutants In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Although Earth-616 hasn’t introduced canonical X-Men characters just yet, it doesn’t mean that mutants are absent. Here, we’ll monitor all characters labeled as Homo superior, the term used to identify these extraordinary beings.

Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel

Currently, the sole recognized mutant character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Iman Vellani. In the final episode of the Ms. Marvel series on Disney+, it’s been confirmed that her abilities stem from a genetic mutation. This revelation was accompanied by a tune reminiscent of the X-Men: The Animated Series.

How The X-Men Could Factor Into Avengers: Secret Wars

As a diehard gamer and comic book enthusiast, I’ve got to say I’m on the edge of my seat about the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars.” While the details are still under wraps, given the rich history of comic books, it’s not far-fetched to speculate that X-Men characters might somehow be involved in this epic showdown. Of course, this is all just wild guesswork on my part, but hey, it’s fun to imagine what could be, right?

In the 2015 “Secret Wars” comic book series by Marvel, the primary Marvel universe is obliterated as it physically clashes with an alternate reality called the Ultimate Universe. It’s not entirely implausible that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could replicate this in their films, resulting in a merger of the MCU with Earth-10005.

It’s possible that we won’t find out if this will serve as a means to unveil a fresh Marvel Cinematic Universe chapter until the summer of 2027.
