As a cinephile with a penchant for dark, thought-provoking films, I found myself utterly captivated by the intricate narrative of The Platform 2. The movie takes us on a harrowing journey through the depths of humanity’s resilience and the lengths people will go to survive.
Five years following his chilling debut with “The Platform“, director Galder Gaztelu-Urritia is back to serve another dose of underwater terror with “The Platform 2“. The Spanish horror sequel premieres on Netflix on October 4, 2024, and quickly climbed to become one of the Top 3 most-watched movies in the U.S. However, the third act twist has sparked considerable debate among viewers, leaving many puzzled about its ultimate meaning.
As a cinephile revisiting the unsettling vertical feeding structure from the initial movie, I find myself drawn back into the powerful allegory of wealth disparity and class division portrayed in Platform 2. This gripping narrative follows a band of desperate survivors as they strive to conquer internal strife and endure unimaginable hardships. The story takes an audacious turn when one character makes a daring decision that merits close examination – delving into the reasons behind it, the execution, and its profound impact on the film’s climax.
What Is Platform 2 About?
Following the success of the 2019 science fiction horror movie “The Platform,” titled “The Platform 2” in this instance, is a thrilling Spanish chiller helmed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. The narrative continues from where the initial film ended, reintroducing characters such as Goreng (Ivan Massague), Dagin (Oscar Jaenada), Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor), and Imoguiri (Antonia San Juan). Additionally, we meet newcomers Perempuan (Milena Smit) and her fellow inmate (Natalia Tena).
In the next installment, there’s a change in the prison system within The Colossal Spire, a towering edifice that serves both as a penal institution and a symbol of societal stratification. The upper echelons bask in an overflow of nourishment, while the lower levels scavenge for meager leftovers. However, in this updated system, food is distributed evenly among all residents, allocating only what is needed for one individual to consume. Exceeding this ration results in legal repercussions. An elite group called the Appointed Ones are granted special privileges that allow them to disregard these regulations.
In the tower, Perempuan gradually comprehends the harsh consequences of breaching the new food ration law’s regulations and her bond with the directive alters. Initially, Perempuan adheres to the law, subsequently enforces it on behalf of the authorities, and rebels when she is deceived and penalized by Dagin Babi (Jaenada). Later, Perempuan decides to utilize the secret exit strategy she learns from her roommate to escape immediately.
What Happens at the End of Platform 2?
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself engrossed in the intricate ending of “Platform 2”. It was only when my character, Perempuan, discovered that every month, the prison undergoes a process called ‘The Interval’, where cells are cleaned out to accommodate new transfers. This cleaning procedure involves the use of sevoflurane gas, which emits an unpleasant smell. Before my roommate’s unfortunate demise, she shared this information with me.
As soon as we detect the gas odor, that’s the critical moment. If everything proceeds smoothly, they will assume we are deceased. However, we’ll regain consciousness. They’ll remove us from the upper level along with the dead bodies, and then…we’ll need to think on our feet.
Following the advice, Woman discovers a means for enduring during the climax by learning about a unique gadget that keeps survivors alert during Intervals. This innovative gadget is a respirator secretly embedded in Francisco Goya’s artwork titled “The Drowning Dog”. To obtain this device, however, Woman must consume the painting itself.
Following the slaying of Dagin and his followers, Perempuan consumes the artwork and employs a breathing apparatus to maintain awareness during The Interval, as The Pit is sanitized to accommodate fresh souls. Once she has successfully feigned her own demise for a sufficient length of time to plan an escape, Perempuan identifies a solitary child in cell 333. Rather than fleeing to secure her own survival, Perempuan selflessly gives up her life to protect the boy confined within cell 333.
In the film’s conclusion, Perempuan and the boy plunge into a dark abyss beneath the sea, suggesting their demise. Yet, a woman shares with Perempuan that children ascend when The Platform resurfaces, indicating she had bravely given her life to save the child. Even as the credits start rolling, the movie offers one last surprising revelation tied to its initial storyline.
The Meaning of Platform 2’s Ending
In an unexpected scene after the end credits roll, the character Goreng (previously seen in Platform) makes an appearance within The Pit, bringing along the young girl he had attempted to save in the initial film. In the original Netflix science fiction movie, following his awakening in The Pit, Goreng encounters his fellow captive Trimagasi, who reveals they have been detained for approximately nine months. Interestingly enough, Trimagasi informs Goreng that their starting point was Level 72, where Perempuan is found after she wakes up following her cellmate’s demise.
It isn’t until the end that we realize The Platform 2 takes place before the original movie, not after. Essentially, the scenes in The Platform 2 happen about a year prior to the events in the first film. Despite not knowing how Goreng and Perempuan are acquainted, the sequence of events suggests they have a past relationship.
At the end, Perempuan queries, “Who are you, here?” Her and Goreng’s tender hug raises more questions than it answers about their history, suggesting a past romance. Despite numerous detours, the finale of The Platform 2 establishes that this tale is a prequel, unfolding before the incidents depicted in the original Platform.
The Platform 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
