It could be a positive indication that an abundant amount of notes signifies promising news for an upcoming movie, as production company NEON is persistently marking its territory in the horror genre by daringly experimenting with unconventional methods. Following the significant achievement of director Osgood Perkins’ film “Longlegs” featuring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, NEON has faith that Perkins will create another significant impact at the box office with his upcoming interpretation of a Stephen King short story titled “The Monkey“. The production company announced a Red Band tag for the new trailer to be released on January 8 at 12pm ET, as stated in a letter from the Motion Picture Association.
Established in 1922, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) is a U.S.-based trade organization comprising five significant American film studios. Its mission is to nurture and strengthen the American film industry. Additionally, the MPA has traditionally held considerable influence over movie ratings and advertising decisions. The MPA developed the Motion Picture Production Code, also known as the Hays Code, which ultimately led to the current voluntary rating system for American films. In a shrewd marketing tactic, NEON distributed a letter from the MPA detailing each scene of profanity and violence that earned its horror film an R-rated designation, labeled as Red Band.
‘The Monkey’ is Already Turning Heads
In a fascinating turn of events, a pair of siblings (portrayed by Theo James in a dual role) stumble upon an ancient, eerie monkey figurine hidden in their father’s attic. This discovery triggers a chilling sequence of grisly and unsettling deaths. As hinted at in the initial trailer, Director Mike Flanagan showcases his horror expertise by paying tribute to the unpredictable and occasionally comical ways humans meet their untimely ends. This week, it was announced with pride by Producer James Wan and NEON that ‘The Monkey’ has been officially rated R for “Intense bloody violence, gory scenes, persistent crude language, and some suggestive content.
As a movie aficionado, I can hardly contain my excitement for Perkins’ upcoming horror masterpiece, featuring the stellar talents of Theo James (from “The White Lotus”), Tatiana Maslany (“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”), Elijah Wood (“Maniac,” but most famously known for his work in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy). While diehard King fans might find the fresh take on an already spine-tingling tale a bit jarring, for those new to Stephen King’s oeuvre, “The Monkey” promises to be a compelling adaptation that skillfully encapsulates his signature brand of twisted terror.
The spotlight is focused on the son of the late Anthony Perkins, famous for his role in Psycho, as he ventures into the horror genre with his new movie, The Monkey. This film will be hitting theaters on February 21, 2025, and NEON has scheduled a fresh trailer to premiere on January 8 at noon Eastern Time.
