These days, it appears director Osgood Perkins is hitting the mark with every project. Following his 2024 blockbuster hit “Longlegs,” which grossed an impressive $126 million at the box office, his new film, titled “The Monkey,”, has been receiving fantastic reviews before its release this weekend. Starring Theo James, this latest Stephen King adaptation is being hyped as a must-see blend of horror and comedy. However, it seems there’s another element worth sticking around for after the credits roll: a surprise post-credits scene.
Based on reports from Total Film, as shared by Gamesradar, the post-credits scene of “The Monkey” doesn’t contribute anything extra to the movie you’ve just watched. Instead, it serves as a sneak peek for director Perkins’ upcoming horror project, titled Keeper. It’s unclear if it’s a complete trailer or merely a teaser, but either way, it’s a compelling reason to remain in your seat. This is because Perkins has established himself as one of the most exciting directors in the genre, with his latest release, “Longlegs,” and previous notable films such as “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” and “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.
On October 3, 2025, the movie “Keeper” will be released in theaters. In this film, Tatiana Maslany from “The Monkey” and Rossif Sutherland from “Orphan: First Kill” play a couple who go to a secluded cabin for a romantic retreat. Given that the setting is a cabin in the woods, it’s not hard to guess that things won’t end well – after all, trouble usually brews in such settings, especially in horror films. When Sutherland’s character, Malcolm, suddenly needs to leave, Maslany’s character Liz finds herself alone and must face a sinister presence. During her struggle, she also uncovers the chilling mysteries concealed within the cabin.
‘Keeper’ Was Born Out of Necessity During the WGA/SAG-AFTRA Strikes
Despite The Monkey being released before Keeper, the production order is actually reversed, as filming for Longlegs wrapped up in early 2023 first. Initially, the plan was to follow it with an adaptation of The King, but fate had other plans when Hollywood experienced a strike later that year, halting all projects. As Perkins shared in a recent interview, “We completed Longlegs and immediately thought, ‘Let’s make The Monkey right away’ because we were so fond of the team we worked with in Vancouver.” “We secured the script, funding, and talent, but then ‘Oh, there’s a strike. Damn.’ We couldn’t proceed. So I had a brief moment of mourning as I was quite enthusiastic about working on The Monkey.
Despite the initial setback of not being able to film “The Monkey” immediately due to writers’ and actors’ strikes, Perkins found a way to keep his creative spirit alive. By discovering a writer, Nick Lepard, who was Canadian and not part of the Writers Guild, they could write a movie for them. Additionally, he mentioned that he could secure Canadian actors who were not bound by SAG rules but could work under the Canadian union. This is how “Keeper” came into being as Perkins was determined to keep moving forward with his work.
Switch to: We discovered a house, we located a screenplay – I didn’t tamper with it as I’m part of the Writers Guild. He [Lepard] penned the screenplay, we secured the actors, we rented a house, we started production… From the point I stopped sobbing, called my producer Chris, to finishing the shoot, it took approximately 14 weeks.
It might seem like we don’t have much time, but let’s face it – some of the most terrifying movies were made under tight deadlines, such as Halloween, Paranormal Activity, and The Blair Witch Project. Will Keeper join this elite horror club? Discover for yourself when it arrives in theaters on October 3. In the meantime, don’t miss The Monkey, opening nationwide on February 21 from Neon.
