Summary
- Zinogre is a popular, symbiotic monster that has appeared in five games since Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.
- Kushala Daora, a dragon with wings of steel, has been featured in five games, starting from Monster Hunter Dos.
- Nargacuga, a predator known for high affinity weapons, has appeared in five games starting from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
Consider this: Monster Hunter shares some similarities with Pokemon. Much like how you can catch the creatures you encounter in Pokemon, you can also capture the monsters you hunt in Monster Hunter. However, instead of engaging in deadly battles, you collect these creatures for materials to use later. What truly sets Monster Hunter apart, though, is that the various monsters are the heart and soul of the series. Each new entry brings a delightful blend of old and new monsters, which contributes to the series’ enduring appeal.
In the gaming world I inhabit, the Monster Hunter series never fails to impress with its vast array of monstrous adversaries. Interestingly enough, there are some creatures that consistently show up across new iterations. Here’s a rundown of the top contenders, along with their debut games:
1. Rathalos (First appeared in Monster Hunter)
2. Nargacuga (Monster Hunter Freedom)
3. Diablos (Monster Hunter G)
4. Tigrex (Monster Hunter 2)
5. Brachydios (Monster Hunter Tri)
6. Lagiacrus (Monster Hunter Freedom 2)
To simplify matters, we’ll focus on the primary games, and only consider their final editions.
10.
Zinogre
Five Games
- Introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
Zinogre represents the newest addition to the series, boasting an impressive lineup of entries. Unlike many other monsters in the series that share five appearances, Zinogre is unique as it originated from the third generation of games. It has consistently appeared in every game since its debut, showcasing the strong affinity players have for this particular monster.
As a fan, I find Zinogre particularly fascinating because they aren’t just overpowered monsters, but rather creatures that thrive symbiotically with Thunderbugs. These bugs reside within their fur, granting them the ability to unleash electrifying attacks. Their power isn’t solely derived from themselves, but from their harmonious existence with their environment.
9.
Kushala Daora
Five Games
- Introduced in Monster Hunter Dos.
In the quests of Monster Hunter 2, Kushala Daora served as the final boss. Since then, it has been a recurring character in the series. While not always present in the initial versions, it’s nearly always included in subsequent updates or new releases of the game.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered Kushala Daora – another formidable Elder Dragon, sporting steel-like wings and command over the very winds themselves. Their armor is impenetrable unless you wield the sharpest weapons, making them quite an elusive adversary. Battling this beast can be both thrilling and aggravating at times.
8.
Nargacuga
Five Games
- Introduced in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
Initially introduced in the PlayStation Portable (PSP) version of Monster Hunter 2, Nargacugas have since made numerous appearances. Notably recognized for being the premier owner of high-affinity weapons across the entire Monster Hunter franchise, this formidable monster is a standout character.
By any standard, Nargacuga is undeniably a predator. They are cunning and camouflage themselves in the shadows, striking with astonishing swiftness that seems almost unnatural. Few vulnerabilities seem to exist for them. To heighten their intimidation factor, there’s the elusive Lucent Nargacuga, capable of becoming virtually invisible.
7.
Khezu
Five Games
- Introduced in the original Monster Hunter
To be honest, there aren’t many pleasant things I can say about Khezu. They might give you chills just by looking at them, but they have this irritating knack for showing up in almost every game. With their vacant, eyeless sockets and a body that seems to ooze nightmares, Khezu is a slippery monster that always manages to stick around.
In the games, Khezu is surprisingly engaging during combat. They extend their limbs to attack from afar, and they use their tail as a suction cup to stay in position. Additionally, they can summon lightning to immobilize you, which only prolongs your interaction with them.
6.
Basarios
Five Games
- Introduced in the original Monster Hunter.
Among the assortment of creatures I often encounter as a gamer, Basarios stands out as a bit enigmatic. They’re not evil by any stretch of the imagination, and can actually be quite intriguing. However, if I had to guess which monster would make an appearance in most games, Basarios wouldn’t be my first pick.
Basarios is a massive creature, encased in and composed of rocks. It possesses the ability to launch fireballs and perform fiery attacks, even heating up its exterior to endure greater damage. Interestingly, it’s classified as a Flying Wyvern, although its wings seem incapable of anything beyond idle flapping.
5.
Kirin
Five Games
- Introduced in the original Monster Hunter
In this series, Kirin stands out as one of the funniest monsters due to their direct likeness to a legendary creature from mythology. Interestingly, among all the Elder Dragons, Kirin is the smallest, roughly similar to the size of an actual horse. Yet, they are remarkably well-loved in the entire series, ranking high in popularity.
Despite having a sharp horn, Kirin usually maintains a safe distance from its adversaries and uses electricity to attack instead. It’s also capable of enveloping itself in electricity, which not only inflicts harm on nearby enemies, but also significantly increases its own speed.
4.
Fatalis
Five Games
- Introduced in the original Monster Hunter.
In numerous aspects, Fatalis, the formidable adversary introduced in the initial game and often hidden boss across multiple games, serves as the emblem of the series. While sharing characteristics with a typical dragon, Fatalis embodies the peak difficulty encountered within the games it graces. Moreover, beyond the original form, there are other manifestations of Fatalis, each technically distinct from the initial one.
In a more simplified and conversational manner: Fatalis is an actual monster with incredible power. It can dash across the battlefield causing immense harm, fly high up to shower fire upon its enemies, and in Monster Hunter World, it even has breath attacks so hot they melt the protective structures you often use for cover. Unlike many other monsters in the series, Fatalis poses a unique and formidable threat.
3.
Tigrex
Six Games
- Introduced in Monster Hunter Freedom 2
In some games, you’ll find Elder Dragons serving as the ultimate bosses. However, there’s also Tigrex, a formidable creature known for its immense power. Contrary to popular belief, Tigrex is just a common monster, but don’t let that fool you. Within the series, Tigrex stands out as one of the strongest monsters, often serving as a challenging peak for players in most games.
The Tigrex is a creature that resembles a tiger but also has elements of dinosaurs and wings, along with an extraordinary amount of anger. When it becomes enraged, it moves faster and enters a state where its attacks deal significant damage without any apparent drawbacks for itself. When battling the Tigrex, it’s crucial to avoid getting hit because even a single blow can be fatal.
2.
Diablos
Seven Games
- Introduced in the original Monster Hunter.
Among all the monsters in the Monster Hunter series, none other than Diablos could potentially defeat Tigrex due to its frequent appearances across the games. Interestingly, Diablos is missing from only one game in the series – Monster Hunter 4, where it was not a part of the base roster. Given its recurring presence and strong reputation within the franchise, Diablos stands out as one of the series’ most powerful creatures.
The Diablos is an enormous beast, sporting horns sharp enough to pierce through any seasoned hunter’s defense. What makes it particularly dangerous is its unexpected speed – it can sprint swiftly and burrow beneath the ground, emerging wherever it chooses. Battling a Diablos is never a careless affair; instead, it continually challenges your strength and skill at every turn.
1.
Rathian And Rathalos
Every Game
As a dedicated gamer of this captivating series, I can’t help but notice the iconic presence of two mighty beasts that have become synonymous with its identity – the indomitable Rathalos and Rathian. These legendary monsters grace every game in the series without fail, standing tall as the defining symbols of this epic adventure.
In a harmonious partnership, Rathalos and Rathian are formidable creatures that complement each other. When one falters, the other steps up. Rathalos primarily employs swift dives and fiery assaults, while Rathian relies on quick dashes and tail swipes for poisonous attacks. Both are intimidating adversaries, offering a high skill ceiling to make them more challenging in every game.
