As a long-time fan of the sitcom world, I must confess that I’ve had my fair share of love and loathing for the characters gracing our screens. And oh boy, “The Big Bang Theory” certainly has its share of contenders for the least likable character crown! For me, it’s Leonard Hofstadter who takes the cake (or should I say, pie?).
Regardless of your deep affection for “The Big Bang Theory”, it’s fair to acknowledge that some characters in the series, including its prequel and spin-off “Young Sheldon”, can be somewhat trying. Over a span of twelve seasons, viewers followed the lives of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), Penny Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco), Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz (Melissa Rauch) as they lived, grew up, started families, and built their futures. In “Young Sheldon”, viewers are given a glimpse into Sheldon’s childhood and teenage years, portrayed by Iain Armitage, as well as his family life before he met his friends.
As a devoted fan, let me share some thoughts: There’s always been a curious debate among us fans about which characters from “The Big Bang Theory” and its spin-off “Young Sheldon” really grind our gears. So, here’s my take on the most annoying characters, presented in no specific order. From an overly sanctimonious pastor to a few major figures within the universe of “The Big Bang Theory,” these are the characters that have left us scratching our heads and reaching for the fast-forward button.
Pastor Jeff (Young Sheldon)
Pastor Jeff, also known as “Pastor Jeff,” is portrayed as a judgmental and unreliable individual who neglects his followers during their critical moments. Beneath his friendly and down-to-earth exterior, he serves as a source of conflict for the young Sheldon, who harbors a balanced skepticism towards religion due to his highly intelligent and scientific mindset. Despite this, Pastor Jeff is quite obstinate in his discussions with Sheldon, consistently rejecting any viewpoints other than his own.
In a particularly regrettable incident during the fifth season, Pastor Jeff stands out for all the wrong reasons. Upon hearing from Sheldon’s mother Mary (Zoe Perry) that Sheldon’s brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) is expecting a child with his girlfriend Mandy (Emily Osment), he lashes out at Mary and George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber), criticizing them for allowing Georgie to get a girl pregnant outside of marriage. He even demands that Mary take a break from her church work. This narrow-minded, harsh reaction shatters Mary, earning Pastor Jeff a spot on this list. It’s important to remember that just because someone is a clergy member doesn’t guarantee they possess moral integrity.
Howard Wolowitz
Some individuals believe that by the finale of “The Big Bang Theory,” Howard Wolowitz has demonstrated he transformed into a mature, reliable spouse and father, distinct from the sleazy suitor depicted initially in the series. However, this assessment is not entirely accurate. From the show’s outset, it becomes apparent that Howard yearns to be a charming ladies’ man, yet he transcends mere oddity – he invades people’s privacy.
In essence, you’ve grasped the point. At the outset of “The Big Bang Theory,” Howard appears as an unsavory, odd character. Despite marrying Bernadette and having two kids, their relationship sometimes shows signs of disrespect, with Howard tending to treat Bernadette more like a mother or maid, which she herself points out when he shirks household chores. Even Raj, his closest friend, isn’t immune; Howard frequently teases Raj over trivial matters such as enjoying Taylor Swift music. Throughout the series, Howard undergoes several changes in life, but fundamentally, he remains unaltered in character.
Mandy McAllister
In Season 5 of “Young Sheldon,” viewers are introduced to Mandy McAllister, portrayed by Emily Osment who’s well-known for her role in “Hannah Montana.” From the get-go, Mandy is found to be less than truthful. Upon meeting Georgie, she deceives him, claiming to be 25 years old, while Georgie reciprocates with a false age of 21. The reality is that Mandy is actually 29 and Georgie is only 17. This article won’t delve into the potential legal complexities surrounding their relationship, but it’s essential to note that Mandy becomes pregnant, which puts the young couple in a challenging position.
In different scenes of the show “Young Sheldon”, Mandy frequently neglects her rental payments leading to eviction, urinates in George Sr. and Mary’s kitchen sink, and disregards the baby shower prepared for her by Missy and Mandy themselves. Her continued association with Georgie, despite their significant age gap, is quite uncomfortable, and overall, she comes across as a rather annoying character. I apologize to those who admire Mandy, but she truly is an extremely dislikable one.
Leonard Hofstadter
In the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” Leonard Hofstadter is depicted as a character who exhibits whiny, insecure, and dismissive behavior, yet somehow manages to win over Penny, a beautiful and outgoing woman. From the series’ inception, Leonard forms an unhealthy obsession with Penny, making grandiose claims about their future children being intelligent and attractive after just one conversation with her. However, when they begin dating, Leonard is far from kind to Penny. He appears more interested in her physical appearance than her intellect, which he often undervalues. This disrespect for Penny is evident in his invasion of her privacy, treating her as if she’s not intelligent, and even re-writing her college papers without her consent. This lack of respect culminates when Leonard kisses another woman while on a research trip.
As a gamer putting this in first person, let me rephrase: It’s not just about Penny; Leonard takes research funds for himself to get a sleek laser for his lab. He goes against Raj’s repeated, strong protests by dating his sister Priya (Aarti Mann). To those he perceives as less intelligent, including Penny’s ex-boyfriend Zack (Brian Thomas Smith), he can be downright rude. Plus, Johnny Galecki’s fake-eating skills are terrible and it’s incredibly annoying to watch.
Sheldon Cooper
Indeed, you’re spot on! In “The Big Bang Theory,” it’s hard not to notice that Sheldon Cooper, the main character who even got his own spin-off, is often the least likable. Even Iain Armitage’s portrayal of a younger Sheldon seems more bearable. However, as Sheldon matures, his behavior becomes less endearing. It’s not uncommon to question why any of his friends continue to associate with him. He’s often dismissive and can even be harsh, rarely considering others’ feelings. When confronted about his poor behavior, he often defends himself or worsens the situation.
As a gamer, I can’t help but notice how uniquely awful Sheldon treats Amy Farrah Fowler, the lady I somehow manage to tie the knot with on the show. Despite his inflated opinion of himself, he looks down on her, even though I should be valuing her more. His dismissal of Amy’s desire for physical intimacy is nothing short of a joke that’s lost on everyone but him, and time and again, he disappoints her without any real consequences. Sure, Sheldon is an over-the-top sitcom character, but that doesn’t make his behavior any less frustrating. He still sucks, no doubt about it.
“The Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon” are both available to stream on Max.
