As a longtime fan of DC Comics and someone who has spent countless hours delving into the intricate lore and rich history of these iconic characters, I can confidently say that the Justice Society of America (JSA) is home to some truly remarkable individuals. Each member brings unique abilities and experiences to the table, making them a formidable force against any threat that arises.
A significant number of current fans of DC Comics and its characters recognize the Justice League of America. After all, Warner Bros. brought their live-action version to life not just once, but twice! However, it might surprise some that the Justice League isn’t DC’s oldest superhero team. That title belongs to the Justice Society of America, which dates back to 1940, predating the Justice League by two decades.
In the 1940s, the Justice Society of America first appeared in “Comics All-Star” issue #3. This means that the team initially consisted of heroes from the Golden Age. Although it was later replaced by the Justice League of America, it never completely disappeared due to DC’s frequent practice of rebooting its universe.
This article focuses on the most formidable characters who have been members of the Justice Society of America (JSA), a team that has housed some of DC Comics’ mightiest and influential superheroes. Many of these characters were modeled after characters from the Golden Age. The JSA has seen numerous lineups, each with its own strong contributors. In this piece, we highlight the most powerful individuals who have graced the JSA, evaluated based on their abilities, comic book history, and comparisons to other heroes. For the sake of clarity, only the main DC Comics continuity is taken into account; variations from other Earths are not considered.
14. Hourman
One of the original members of the Justice Society of America was Hourman, yet over time, three distinct individuals have taken on this title. Rex Tyler was the initial Hourman and it was under his watch that he acquired his unique abilities. As a chemist and biochemist by trade, Tyler inadvertently developed Miraclo, the source of his extraordinary powers.
When Tyler consumes Miraclo, it grants him extraordinary abilities for an hour. After the elapsed 60 minutes, he returns to being an ordinary man again. Miraclo endows Tyler with remarkable superpowers such as enhanced physical strength, agility, resilience, and endurance. He also possesses superior night vision, mastery in martial arts, and can survive submerged underwater. Prior to gaining recognition, Tyler advertised his superhero services before rising through the ranks to become a well-respected hero.
When it comes to raw strength, Hourman may not be the most powerful member of the Justice Society of America (JSA). However, his intelligence and unique abilities make him incredibly formidable. Unfortunately, the idea portrayed in Tyler’s character, who gains superpowers through a drug, isn’t the healthiest message for children. As a result, his source of power was changed in subsequent depictions. Nevertheless, for an hour at a time, Hourman can dish out some serious force, whether he’s working alone or with the team, making him one of the JSA’s strongest original members.
13. Atom Smasher
Although Atom Smasher isn’t as well-known among DC characters, he recently appeared in “Black Adam” portrayed by Noah Centineo. Albert Rothstein is a descendant of the Golden Age Atom, Al Pratt. Similar to his forebear, Albert possesses the capacity to modify his body’s size and density, although he cannot shrink; however, he can expand to colossal proportions.
Initially known as Nuklon within the Justice League, this character subsequently transformed into Atom Smasher when joining the JSA. Atom Smasher boasts super-strength and an extraordinary ability to manipulate his molecular makeup, a trait he inherited from his grandfather whom he admired and sought to emulate.
Rothstein’s abilities are striking, given his extraordinary strength even at regular size. When he alters his size, he becomes a formidable force against his adversaries. In one scuffle, Atom Smasher expands to sixty feet tall and possesses the power to knock out Power Girl with a single blow. Although he can be defeated by sufficient force, it’s undeniable that Atom Smasher is a dominant and powerful member of the JSA.
12. The Star-Spangled Kid / Stargirl
Over the course of the Justice Society of America’s existence, numerous superheroes bearing the name “Star” have wielded the Cosmic Staff as their weapon. Among these stars, Courtney Whitmore stands out as the most potent and awe-inspiring, having masterfully utilized the Cosmic Staff under her alter ego, Stargirl. This powerful artifact was passed down to her by Jack Knight, who was known as the second Starman and the son of the original Starman, Ted Knight. The Cosmic Staff holds immense power, allowing her to fly simply by standing on it, but that’s not all Stargirl has at her disposal.
Besides owning the Cosmic Transformation Sash, Stargirl has the ability to transform cosmic energy into a useful power source for various tasks, as its name implies. Her assorted gadgets enhance her physical abilities significantly, leading to superhuman strength, quick reflexes, swiftness, flexibility, durability, and endurance. Furthermore, she can emit beams of light to confuse her adversaries.
Moreover, Stargirl possesses the ability to handle and alter cosmic power, generate and regulate celestial energy, and shield against assaults. Initially, Courtney was the second Star-Spangled Kid, but she adopted Stargirl as her superhero persona. Later, she switched it to Starwoman. In the 2003 issue “JSA: All-Stars” #4, she joined the Justice Society of America (JSA), maintaining a significant role in the group, excluding any alterations or resets.
11. The Flash
Among various characters known as the Flash, it is only Jay Garrick who has been part of the Justice Society of America. Notably, he was also one of the original founders of this group, debuting in the first issue of “Flash Comics” published back in 1940.
The Flash obtained his extraordinary abilities after breathing in mist from a lab mishap. This granted him an astonishing speed, making him a superhero, much like other heroes. The Flash was among the most prominent Golden Age heroes, yet he served with the JSA for merely six issues before leaving. He reappeared a few years later in “All-Star Comics” #24, and ever since then, he has remained a part of the JSA, regardless of its various iterations.
The abilities of The Flash extend beyond just speed and agility; he ages at a remarkably slow rate, making him an enduring figure, having been active for decades since his initial appearance. He possesses the power to pass through solid matter, produce wind blasts, demonstrates high intelligence, and can mold energy in diverse ways. The Flash is indispensable within the team, but he also excels as a lone hero, a factor that motivated Barry Allen to emulate him.
10. Green Lantern
In contrast to the modern Green Lanterns who emerged during the Silver Age of comics, the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, hails from the Golden Age. As a railway engineer, he discovers an alien lantern made from a meteor that emits a mystical green flame, instructing him on how to create a ring from its metal. By following these instructions, he transforms into the Green Lantern, a superhero and founding member of the Justice Society of America.
The attire of the original Green Lantern stands out from his subsequent counterparts due to its vibrant multi-colored design. Unlike contemporary Green Lanterns, his ring isn’t just limited to creating constructs; it offers a wider array of abilities. The Green Lantern is capable of flight, passing through solid matter, hypnotizing individuals, emitting energy bursts, melting metals, and even time travel, among other powers. Additionally, the costume provides protection from metal objects, but there’s one significant vulnerability.
The Green Lantern’s ring is ineffective against anything plant-like, which means wooden items can hinder it. This might have posed a greater challenge in the 1940s, but for current Green Lanterns, it isn’t much of a restriction. Nevertheless, the Green Lantern’s remarkable powers made him an indispensable part of the Justice Society and one of its strongest figures. Due to reboots and changes in continuity, he continues to exist today.
9. Black Adam
In the realm of comic books, Black Adam first appeared as one of the formidable supervillains and arch-nemeses to Captain Marvel. Much like his adversary, he can transform into a powerful being by uttering the word “SHAZAM.” However, unlike Captain Marvel who gained his powers more recently, Black Adam’s magical abilities were bestowed upon him in ancient times. Over time, Black Adam started off as a villain but eventually evolved into an antihero.
In this role, he joined the Justice Society of America (JSA) in 2002, partnering with his age-old adversary. Due to his previous conduct, he was initially given a probationary status, causing some disagreements within the team who had previously clashed with him. Captain Marvel was one of Black Adam’s fiercest critics, and eventually, he departed from the team, stating that Black Adam’s methods were unacceptable for the JSA standards.
Black Adam’s powers originate from ancient Egyptian deities, granting him the endurance of Shu, the agility of Horus, the might of Amon, the intelligence of Zehuti, the force of Aten, and the bravery of Mehen. These capabilities make him comparable to Captain Marvel, yet unlike his equally formidable adversary, Black Adam doesn’t shy away from confrontations. He is relentless in his assaults and often defeats opponents through sheer strength and tenacity.
8. Captain Marvel
Prior to adopting the name SHAZAM!, Billy Batson’s powerful persona was initially called Captain Marvel and was part of the Justice Society of America (JSA). Despite popular belief, he didn’t join this team in the 1940s; instead, it wasn’t until the JSA was reorganized much later, in 2002, that Captain Marvel became a member. The DC Universe’s timeline is quite convoluted to delve into thoroughly, but what matters is that Captain Marvel did serve on the JSA, albeit with a unique twist.
Incidentally, Captain Marvel teamed up with his former adversary, Black Adam. Although they possess comparable abilities, Captain Marvel is frequently referred to as “The World’s Mightiest Mortal” due to being granted power by the sorcerer Shazam, which originates from legendary figures. When Billy Batson, a young boy, transforms into Captain Marvel by invoking the sorcerer’s name, he metamorphoses into an adult with formidable powers.
His powers are divine in origin, and he’s able to perform magic. His other powers include the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. In many ways, Captain Marvel is a magical version of Superman, and he’s one of the JSA’s strongest members.
7. Jakeem Thunder
Originally, Johnny Thunder and Yz were among the initial members of the Justice Syndicate, but they were quite formidable as a team. However, it is Jakeem Williams who surpasses them in power. When Jakeem acquires a pen that houses the genie Thunderbolt, a connection forms between them, leading to an alliance and transformation into Jakeem Thunder. This dynamic duo harnesses Thunderbolt’s unlimited magical prowess alongside Jakeem’s exceptional strategic intellect.
2001’s “JSA Secret Files” #2 introduces Thunder as a member of the Justice Society of America. Here, he aids the team in battling Lkz, an evil blue genie. It is crucial to comprehend the immense power that Thunderbolt wields, and thus, Jakeem. Thunderbolt hails from the fifth dimension, granting him the capacity to manipulate reality and fulfill any wish Jakeem makes, but he tends to interpret them quite literally.
Essentially, Thunderbolt is a character similar to Superman’s adversary, Mister Mxyzptlk, who hails from the fifth dimension. When they team up as Jakeem Thunder, they are nearly invincible. DC Comics has subtly suggested that their power will grow significantly in the future. However, the time when they merge into a single being, the strongest member of the JSA, has not come yet.
6. Power Girl
Power Girl, who is Superman’s cousin, originates from an alternate universe called Earth-Two. She first appeared in “All-Star Comics” issue 58 back in 1976. Unlike the Supergirl from Earth-One, Power Girl is a separate character known as Kara-Zor L. After finding herself stranded within DC’s primary storyline, Power Girl evolved into a genuine superhero and a formidable JSA team member, showcasing immense power.
Power Girl initially belonged to the Justice Society on an alternate Earth (Earth-Two) before she appeared on the primary Earth (Earth-One). Following her arrival on this reality, she also became a part of its corresponding Justice Society. A significant amount of changes (retconning) were made for her character in this new setting, most of which were quickly reversed. Power Girl collaborated with the Justice Society throughout the comics’ Bronze Age and re-joined them when they regrouped in the ’90s.
Power Girl, being the one who arrived on Earth-Two after escaping from Krypton, is naturally older and more seasoned. This age difference results in her having more heroic experience as well as greater power, since she’s absorbed more solar energy over time compared to her counterpart on Earth-One. She possesses all the typical superpowers of a Kryptonian on Earth, making her one of the team’s strongest and most capable members.
5. Wonder Woman
Initially, Wonder Woman was an honorary member of the Justice Society of America, but she was assigned a role that seemed misogynistic – that of the Society Secretary. Instead of displaying her superhero prowess by fighting battles and meting out justice, Diana was tasked with taking minutes at meetings and providing refreshments like coffee. Today, Wonder Woman is a more fully realized character with a richer personality and backstory, making her a true superhero in every sense.
In a later development due to certain changes in the storyline and universe, the contemporary version of Wonder Woman, Diana of Themyscira, emerged as the most powerful member ever admitted to the Justice Society of America (JSA). This transformation took place during the “Rebirth” event in 2016.
DC doesn’t shy away from causing significant changes, and Diana has not been exempt from these historical alterations. Despite these shifts, Wonder Woman continues to demonstrate an impressive array of superpowers that make her extraordinarily strong. She excels in all types of combat, is invincible and ageless, possesses divine abilities, boasts high intelligence, and offers much more. In essence, she’s progressed significantly from her days as a secretary for the Justice Society.
4. Magog
In the “Kingdom Come” narrative, Magog emerges as the antagonist, portrayed as an incredibly powerful adversary to Superman. Initially exclusive to this storyline, Magog was later assimilated into the main DC Universe, with his character being expanded upon and developed further. Originally known as Lance Corporal David Reid, a marine and great-grandson of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Justice Society of America (JSA) became aware of him due to FDR’s role in establishing the original superhero team.
Reid acquired his powers following an unusual incident where a rock was thrust into his arm, becoming embedded within him. Instead of a wound, he was left with a distinctive mark resembling an eye. This enabled him to channel energy and fire it at his adversaries. Additionally, he developed extraordinary physical strength and endurance, proved resistant to the majority of assaults, and through training, became proficient in both weaponry and unarmed combat.
In the twelfth issue of “Justice Society of America,” Magog initially appeared as Lance before joining the team. A battle with Gog resulted in Lance’s death and resurrection, whereupon he was endowed with enhanced power and took on Gog’s appearance. Renaming himself Magog, his character underwent a transformation, shifting in both personality and alliances. At this juncture, his might grew significantly, but he demonstrated less inclination to work cooperatively as part of the team.
3. Superman
In the realm of DC Comics, the Superman from the Golden Age held an esteemed position as a founding honorary member of their legendary superhero team. However, it’s important to note that he isn’t the most powerful manifestation of the character. The strongest version of Superman, who was also part of this group, is more famously recognized as the Superman from Earth-22, often referred to within the “Kingdom Come” universe.
In the year 2007, the matured and formidable iteration of Superman, also known as the Last Son of Krypton, became a member of the Justice Society of America in issue #10 of “Justice Society of America”. The narrative arc of “Kingdom Come” stands out among DC stories, making it an ideal candidate for adaptation into a TV series. This is primarily because of its compelling portrayal of Superman, who appears older and disillusioned with heroism, having retired from his duties. He is later coaxed back into action to deal with Magog and a rebellious new generation of superheroes, eventually arriving on Earth-One.
Superman possesses numerous abilities, some of which are quite uncommon, but overall, he ranks among the mightiest superheroes in DC Comics. In his current form, Superman is stronger than modern versions of himself, earning him the title of the most powerful Superman to join the Justice Society of America, albeit as a temporary rather than permanent member.
2. Doctor Fate
In contemporary DC Comics, numerous magical entities are present, yet they all trace their roots back to the first: Kent Nelson, the original Doctor Fate. It was within his temple that Nelson awakened Nabu, who is the Lord of Order, and in return, he was granted immense cosmic magical power. As Doctor Fate, he has command over magic and utilizes a diverse collection of mystical artifacts to enhance his abilities as well as boost Nelson’s physical condition. These artifacts include extending his lifespan, transforming him into peak physical form, and more.
Throughout the years, multiple individuals have assumed the role of Doctor Fate, but Nelson stands out as the original and one of the most potent due to his proficiency in mastering his supernatural skills. Doctor Fate possesses an impressive array of abilities, such as time travel, teleportation, and manipulation of reality.
Doctor Fate initially joined the Justice Society of America as one of its original members and has remained a consistent presence within various iterations of the team, both in comic books and beyond. Over time, he’s undergone several revisions and reinterpretations, much like many iconic DC characters. Despite being one of the JSA’s strongest members, Doctor Fate is often overshadowed by a more powerful character within the group, whose abilities are largely incomprehensible to most.
1. The Spectre
The Spectre stands out among DC’s superheroes due to his unique nature, as he is not an ordinary metahuman but rather a divine being. Jim Corrigan, who was once a police officer, perished in the line of duty, only to be bound instead to the Spectre – the very embodiment of God’s wrath and retribution. Although Corrigan and the Spectre are distinct entities, they often collaborate, albeit with occasional disagreements arising between them.
Despite any challenges they might face, The Spectre stands out as one of the most formidable superheroes within the JSA and the entire DC Universe. This character draws his strength from divine power, making him both immortal and invincible. He is equally skilled in magic, capable of creating illusions, possessing a vast array of superhuman abilities common among the elite in the DC Universe, and excelling in both armed and unarmed combat.
In various iterations and with diverse hosts, The Spectre stands out, but Corrigan is arguably the most recognized. He played a crucial role in establishing the Justice Society of America (JSA), serving for several years before departing and rejoining multiple times. Owing to his divine powers and magical capabilities, The Spectre is undeniably the strongest member within the JSA.
