As a longtime New Girl enthusiast who’s been through the loft’s front door more times than I care to admit, I must express my disappointment with Nick Miller’s projected future career as a car salesman in 2024. It seems that Jake Johnson may have forgotten the golden rule of storytelling: don’t mess with Nick Miller’s authenticity!
Despite the trend of sequels and revivals in today’s television landscape, it’s surprising that New Girl has been passed over. This comedy series is often praised as one of the most enjoyable to rewatch, and fans have expressed a strong desire to see their favorite characters reunite on screen. Unfortunately, fresh episodes of this popular show won’t be appearing on the 2025 TV lineup or anytime soon. However, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, and Damon Wayans Jr. did get together for a reunion, sharing their thoughts about where they believe their characters would be in 2024. To be frank, I don’t share Johnson’s vision for Nick’s future.
The four gentlemen gathered together for an issue of People magazine, titled “Sexiest Man Alive,” to chat about various topics. They debated on who might be hindering the show’s progress from having a potential competitor and shared their opinions on what they believed their characters have been doing. Morris hinted that Winston would be spending time with his children, while Wayans made a joke about Coach being bald and out of work. Greenfield’s response seemed most fitting for his character Schmidt, as he mentioned he “just bought a high-powered washer” and is currently “washing everything with it.” This conversation seems to foreshadow the plot of what could be one of the best episodes of New Girl!
Nevertheless, Johnson’s response regarding what Nick is currently engaged with seemed peculiar to me. Upon further questioning, he responded:
Mustache, car dealership. Into sales. Thick mustache. Other than that, same guy.
It’s tricky to discern whether Johnson was just kidding or being sincere in the interview, as the atmosphere was far from serious – they even poked fun at Morris for his Emmy win on Fargo. If he meant it seriously, though, I believe Johnson should take a moment and revisit New Girl, because the character of Nick Miller, especially beyond Season 7, is not your typical salesman – at least not in my opinion.
If you haven’t been rewatching New Girl annually, by the end of its final season, Nick had accomplished quite a bit in his life. He got married to Jess, they finally left the loft behind, co-owned a bar with Schmidt, and became a published author. It would take quite a transformation for Nick to unexpectedly become a car dealership salesman.
To clarify, I don’t mean to imply that being a salesman is inherently negative; however, it might not align with Johnson’s personality. For instance, salespeople are often portrayed as skilled at bending the truth for sales, but fans of “New Girl” know that Nick is abysmal at telling lies – something that was one of the show’s most prominent elements!
Despite an unlikely scenario where Nick might have quit writing and required a different job, it’s hard to imagine him venturing into sales. A far more plausible option seems to be his return to bartending instead of embarking on a new profession.
It’s my belief that Nick will be sporting a mustache by 2024, an idea I wholeheartedly support. (Johnson’s thought)
Although it’s uncertain whether we’ll have another season or reboot for New Girl, you can still enjoy its laugh-out-loud charm by streaming all seven seasons on Hulu, if you have a subscription.
