As a gamer who grew up in the Midwest, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of kinship with these Midwest icons. It’s like watching my favorite indie band suddenly skyrocket to fame and then seeing them become the unexpected mascot for a political campaign!
Make some room, coconut trees. Vice President Kamala Harris’ energetic presidential campaign, powered by modern culture, persists in its digital influence. From Kamala HQ’s edgy ‘Brat’ branding on platform X (previously Twitter) to the playful introduction reminiscent of reality TV show “Love Island” for her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
It didn’t take long for social media to associate Walz, who was recently chosen as the vice presidential candidate, with Chappell Roan, a rapidly rising 26-year-old pop singer from the Midwest. Her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of Midwest Princess,” reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart about a year after its release.
The comparisons to the Midwest Princess intensified when Kamala HQ posted on Twitter, “We’ve got some new goods for you,” along with a link to a camouflage hat similar to Roan’s merchandise. The product description says, “You requested it, and here it is. The most renowned political hat in the United States.”

As a political enthusiast who has followed countless campaigns, I must say that the Harris-Walz campaign’s decision to offer a $40 hat was a masterstroke. Having seen many campaigns struggle to connect with their target audience, especially young voters and midwestern hunters, this move seemed like a brilliant strategy.
“Cahn expressed astonishment about it,” Cahn said to WWD. “For 32 years, we’ve been operating our business without encountering such an occurrence – making a sample in the morning only to find that they had sold a million dollars’ worth of hats by the following morning.”
At a Wisconsin rally on Wednesday, musician Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame donned his hat during his performance. The pictures capture him conversing with Kamala Harris, Governor Tim Walz, and the distinctive beanie that has since become symbolic.
As a gamer, I jumped into the conversation on social media. I initially shared a fan’s comment comparing my in-game hat to a singer’s merchandise, which sparked quite a response. The comment read: “How much of a stereotype do you have to be to see hunting colors and think it’s a Chapell Roan thing.” The user later added: “It seems I may have misunderstood; this could indeed be a Chapell Roan reference.”
As a Midwesterner, I shared a picture comparing my favorite hats – the ones I affectionately call the Midwest Princess and Harris-Walz. I captioned it with a question, “Can you believe it?” or simply “Is this for real?”

You can now pre-order the hat through the Harris-Walz campaign website. Each purchase made will serve as a contribution to the Harris Victory Fund. The hats you order are scheduled for delivery on October 14th.
