The Night Agent” stands out among Netflix’s top-rated action series, having completed two highly successful seasons since its 2023 debut. The initial season saw such remarkable success that another season was greenlit just a week after its premiere. Now, with Season 2 just released recently, it’s quickly climbing up Netflix’s US rankings. Given this show’s impressive track record, plans for a third season are already underway.
Indeed, it was announced that the series would have a third season even before the second one was made available, which suggests Netflix has high confidence in The Night Agent. Starring Gabriel Basso as FBI agent Peter Sutherland transformed into a Night Agent, the show is filled with government conspiracies at the highest level, thrilling action, and shocking plot twists that keep you guessing. In the first season, Peter saved the President from an assassination attempt, while the second season took him to a global stage. With the finale of The Night Agent Season 2 leaving us on the edge of our seats for what’s next, here’s all we know about the upcoming season.
‘The Night Agent’ Season 3 Will Make Several Cast Changes
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the third season of “The Night Agent.” In an exclusive chat with Deadline, the show’s creator, Shawn Ryan, revealed that while each season will have its distinct identity, there will be some continuity that extends to the actors as well. Some familiar faces are set to reappear, and we’ll also see some new talents joining the cast. However, the fate of certain characters remains unclear at this point in the storyline.
In the upcoming season 3, the captivating character of Peter Sutherland will be played by Gabriel Basso once more, ensuring his presence throughout the new episodes. Joining him is Louis Herthum, who took on the role of the recent adversary Jacob Monroe in the series. Notably returning are Amanda Warren as Catherine Weaver, Fola Evans-Akingbola as Chelsea Arrington, and Ward Horton as the cunning Governor Hagan, who intends to rise to the presidency in season 3. Alongside Albert Jones, Evans-Akingbola and Horton have been promoted to series regulars.
Fresh talent is set to appear in the ensemble cast of “The Night Agent,” with Jennifer Morrison from “Once Upon a Time,” Stephen Moyer known for “True Blood,” David Lyons hailing from “Revolution,” Genesis Rodriguez recognized from “Umbrella Academy,” Suraj Sharma famous for “Life of Pi,” and Callum Vinson who has starred in “Chucky.
At the moment of writing, Marwan Kenzari and Luciane Buchanan, who played Sami and Rose Larkin respectively in Season 2, fall under the category of uncertain future appearances. Regrettably, for fans hoping to witness more of Peter Sutherland’s romantic angle, Luciane Buchanan as Rose Larkin will not be returning in Season 3, according to Ryan’s statement concerning her possible return.
We aim to avoid forcing characters to be involved in a particular season consistently and instead focus on telling a story that feels authentic at each moment. While Peter and Rose have an incredibly strong bond due to their shared past traumas from the first two seasons, we’re discussing whether their differences in life and lifestyle are enough to overcome them. So, while I can’t provide a definitive answer yet, we’re actively exploring all aspects of their relationship.
The Plot of ‘The Night Agent’ Season 3
In the finale of “The Night Agent” Season 2, several storylines for Season 3 have been subtly hinted. With Peter being investigated for breaching UN security and disclosing data to Jacob Monroe, there’s a strong possibility that he may embark on a similar path as his father in Season 3 by assuming the role of a double agent.
In the spirit of maintaining secrecy, Catherine requested that Peter carry out his mission discreetly. This implies that he might face limited access to government resources and security, potentially leading to more complications than in Season 2. The focus of Season 3 appears to be leaning towards espionage as Peter delves deeper into Monroe’s influence on Hagan’s election. Yet, rest assured, the thrilling action that has become synonymous with “The Night Agent” will not be absent; instead, viewers can expect an exciting blend of high-stakes espionage and heart-stopping action.
It appears that according to the series creator Shawn Ryan, there might not be any romantic prospects for Peter with Rose in the upcoming season. In Season 2, Peter ended things with Rose, asking her to move on and forget about him. With doubts surrounding Buchanan’s return in Season 3, it seems we’ll see less of the persistent character Rose Larkin compared to Seasons 1 and 2. Instead, the new season is expected to focus more on Peter as an agent, dealing with a fresh batch of villains and mysteries.
When Will ‘The Night Agent’ Season 3 Be Released?
The announcement for a third season of The Night Agent was made three months before the second season’s release, but as of now, an official date for its premiere remains unknown. Nonetheless, it is anticipated that Season 3 will make its debut around early 2026.
Filming for Season 3 started ahead of schedule in Istanbul in 2024, with plans to shift to New York in 2025. Since production for Season 3 began early, it is anticipated that the time gap between Seasons 2 and 3 will be significantly shorter than the interval between Seasons 1 and 2. The delay in releasing Season 2 was primarily due to the 2023 writers’ strike, which halted work on the series temporarily. However, Deadline reported in October 2024 that fans won’t have to wait too long for Season 3 as Netflix had a writing team working on the new season even during the strike.
