The Original Wicked Was Noted For Tension Between The Two Leads Offstage. How ‘F—ing Champions’ Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Avoided The Same Narrative

As a die-hard musical enthusiast with a heart full of nostalgia for Broadway productions, I can hardly contain my excitement as the release date for Wicked inches closer. The story of Glinda and Elphaba’s transformation has always been captivating, and I was concerned when I heard whispers of tension between the two leading actresses in the original production. However, it seems that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have proven to be a powerhouse duo both on and off-screen, managing to forge an unbreakable bond that has carried them through the challenges of filming this epic tale.

With the arrival of the Wicked premiere approaching, we’re eagerly counting down the days to witness the intriguing tale that unfolds, revealing how Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, transformed into their iconic personas. Amidst the anticipation surrounding one of the most buzzed-about films set for 2024, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, portraying Glinda and Elphaba, made a point to ensure any rivalry depicted on screen did not spill over into their off-screen dynamics. This was particularly important given the history of backstage tension during the Broadway production featuring the original characters.

How Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Avoided Feud Narratives

It’s evident from their appearances together that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have formed a strong friendship during the production of Wicked. In a recent interview, Grande discussed how they managed to avoid annoying each other. This is what she shared:

As a team player, we excelled in our conversations, making them crystal clear and effective. I’m incredibly thankful for this, as we immediately recognized potential pitfalls and decided, “That’s not an option for us. We’re not letting that happen.

During a cover story for Vanity Fair, Cynthia Erivo jumped in on the topic as well. In her words:

As an ardent admirer, I recognized the necessity for a genuine bond, one that would serve as our foundation. To foster this, we chose to guide ourselves with affection, even during instances where the situation seemed ripe with strain within our composition.

The principal actors from the “Wicked” production additionally disclosed that they made a promise to look out for one another when they agreed to transform the Broadway musical and book it’s based on into a movie. Interestingly, the actresses recorded the films (divided into two parts) in London over several years. Grande revealed that filming took place during a period of her life when she underwent numerous changes, including a divorce. Fortunately, these two have remained strong and appear to be good friends up until now.

The Rumored Tension Between Kristin Chenoweth And Idina Menzel

It’s interesting to explore what transpired between Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the Broadway production of Wicked back in 2003. There were reports suggesting that they experienced some strife off stage, even during the period when both actresses were nominated for the same Tony Award. Menzel eventually took home the prize for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, beating Chenoweth.

A year ago, when that musical hit its 20-year mark, I found myself reminiscing about my past squabbles with Vulture. Here’s a snippet from what Chenoweth shared:

In the wake of our opening, my mother began battling cancer. Amidst my emotions and preoccupations, I didn’t believe I stood a chance at winning a Tony. Yes, the roles were for two girls, but the narrative was primarily Elphaba’s. I felt compelled to confront that aspect of myself, as I was deeply emotional. I struggled to suppress it; I wish others could have understood.

Managing a performance eight times a week during the challenging period of caring for an ill parent must have been quite demanding. Chenoweth openly acknowledged and reflected on this difficult phase in her life. She additionally shared:

Over time, we’ve formed our own little unit, and as a sister, I’m sure there were moments when I annoyed her. I’m confident I did. More often than not, I even drive myself crazy. However, only we truly understand each other’s struggles because those experiences are unique to us.

Contrary to rumors that circulated among Broadway stars, Menzel described their relationship as anything but contentious. Instead, she characterized it as “outlandishly supportive,” with both parties being understandably “tired” after playing their roles for over three years. Performing “For Good” at the end of each show was a particularly healing experience for both actresses. As Menzel continued to discuss her experience in Frozen, she emphasized that their bond remained strong throughout.

Regardless of what was happening in our individual lives, it was always comforting to find solace in our shared experience at the end of a performance. We’d often exchange glances and share, ‘I’ve got you. You’ve got me. We’re creating this journey together. We care for each other.’ In the midst of all the external noise, we made an effort to focus on our bond because it was the essence of our connection.

It appears that things are going smoothly with the initial witches, and Grande and Erivo make a fantastic duo too.

Looking forward to attending “Wicked” on its release day, November 22. We’re eagerly anticipating the friendly competition it will have at the box office with the upcoming sequel of “Gladiator”, also scheduled for that day. Here’s hoping for two great movies vying for the audience’s attention!
