As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of cinematic adaptations, from the sublime to the ridiculous. But the latest teaser for “Paddington” has left me utterly bewildered and slightly amused. It’s like the filmmakers are playing a game of “Guess the Title,” and they keep missing.
Fans are upset because the latest teaser for the upcoming “Paddington” film skips over using the complete title, “Paddington in Peru.”
Fans have noted that abbreviating the title of the third “Paddington” movie as just “Paddington” is puzzling to some, as evidenced by comments on the official trailer on YouTube. User @midnightcrow2092 humorously commented, “Ah yes, ‘Paddington,’ the sequel to ‘Paddington 2,'” while @matthewknight5926 made a similar jest: “Ah Yes. My favorite trilogy. ‘Paddington.’ ‘Paddington 2.’ ‘Paddington’… Again.” @samil679 asked a pertinent question, pondering, “Uhhh………. did they forget the title of their own movie?” @IslaNinja playfully questioned why the filmmakers were taking an unusual approach, writing, “Finally a prequel to Paddington 2! I always wondered why they started at 2 instead of 1.”
It’s quite unusual that the studio didn’t include the complete title in the brief teaser, which shows Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) having his passport photo taken in London prior to his journey to Peru. The scene appears to be a strange remake or reboot of the original movie, according to another YouTube user’s comment: “@jeffanderson6806” wrote, “I assumed this was a re-release of the first film based on the title.”
Fans of Paddington are completely confused by the omission of Paddington in Peru’s full title
It’s quite peculiar that the teaser chooses to exclude the entire Peru storyline, given that the final scene shows Paddington getting his passport stamped upon entering Peru. Moreover, it’s perplexing due to the existence of a movie named “Paddington,” as pointed out by @Zookegger in the YouTube comments: “So we have ‘Paddington,’ ‘Paddington 2’ and now ‘Paddington.'” Another user, @steevealbright, is eagerly anticipating another “Paddington” film: “Can’t wait for the fourth movie, ‘Paddington 2,’ in 2027.”
The Paddingtoning”—and @a.motion2346 speculated that someone at Sony might have been slacking off with the title. It was @5MadMovieMakers, however, who provided the most amusing theory as to why the title seemed strange—perhaps there were some copyright issues with Peru. Interestingly, several commenters clarified that the movie’s actual title is “Paddington in Peru” instead of just “Paddington,” since a film by that name was already released in 2014.
Paddington in Peru might be the third installment in a series, but there are several changes afoot
In 2014, the film titled “Paddington” was released to widespread acclaim, appreciated by both critics and viewers. This seemingly child-oriented movie effectively avoided speaking down to its audience, a remarkable feat. The story follows Ben Whishaw’s charming, gentle bear as he departs from his home in “darkest Peru” and arrives in London, where he encounters the Brown family. Despite Henry Brown (Hugh Bonneville) insisting that a stranger like the bear should not reside in his household, his wife Mary (Sally Hawkins), along with their children Judy and Jonathan (Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin), join forces to persuade him to welcome Paddington into their home.
In essence, “Paddington 2” follows a similar pattern where Paddington Bear finds himself in various predicaments and encounters the disreputable actor Phoenix Buchanan (played by Hugh Grant who claims this is his best film ever). This leads him to end up in prison. Despite the circumstances, Paddington’s optimistic demeanor influences the other prisoners, leading them to join forces and aid him in returning to the Brown family. However, director Paul King was unavailable for “Paddington in Peru”, with Dougal Wilson taking over instead. Additionally, Ben Whishaw (who voices Paddington) won’t be in the third movie, with Emily Mortimer stepping into Mary’s role. As a result, “Paddington in Peru” might have a different feel compared to the first two films, but it should be clarified that it does not share the same title as the initial movie.
The movie featuring Paddington is scheduled to hit UK theaters on November 8, 2024. As of now, there’s no announced release date for the US.
