The Penguin Creator Reveals Series Is Inspired by Scarface

As an avid gamer and comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark, gritty world of Gotham City, I can confidently say that the upcoming HBO Original series, “The Penguin,” starring the talented Colin Farrell, is a game-changer.

Greetings to my companion, here’s a unique glimpse at the character Oz, portrayed by Colin Farrell, in an upcoming series titled “The Penguin.” Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the Batman universe has been known for its raw brutality, as demonstrated in “The Batman.” However, it seems that this gritty vibe is also influencing Colin Farrell’s character in HBO’s The Penguin. This connection was revealed by the series creator, Lauren LeFranc, in a recent interview with Empire magazine. According to LeFranc, the inspiration for the character’s portrayal comes from the world of Tony Montana, as seen in the 1983 film “Scarface,” starring Al Pacino.

Matt Reeves conceived the Scarface narrative – a tale of power ascension. I transformed it into an exploration of this character’s psyche. Traditionally, mobsters are portrayed as larger than life, so there’s an air of grandiosity to it, but he’s simply a man, a complex individual. This distinguishes him from previous iterations of the Penguin in the comics, who were often depicted as being from affluent, well-known families.

In comics, the bird-themed villain known as Penguin – often depicted wearing a monocle and top hat – made his debut in issue #58 of “Detective Comics” back in 1941. During the same interview, LeFranc mentioned…

“In the movie, I found myself in the shoes of a character who was second best to Carmine Falcone. Yet, his background was largely unknown. Personally, I felt it crucial that he originated from humble beginnings and yearned for greater status and recognition.”

In a forthcoming fall release, the “twisted” series under HBO Originals previously known as “The Penguin’s,” will be unveiled. The artist responsible for crafting the prosthetics, Mike Marino, shared insights about designing Oz’s (Farrell) character during a panel at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con event (via Max).

As someone who has spent many years studying and observing wildlife, I have come across various injured birds and older penguins with chipped beaks and other signs of hardship. One particular image that stands out to me is a photograph of a bird with a curved, scarred face on one side. It’s a haunting reminder of the challenges these creatures face in their lives. But what struck me most was how, when compared to a photo of a bird, this injured penguin’s face appears to mimic the mouth of its species. It is a poignant and humbling reminder of the resilience and adaptability of wildlife, even in the face of adversity.

As star Colin Farrell already revealed prior to Comic-Con, filming has officially wrapped on The Penguin. And the Oscar-nominated lead is teasing an “incredibly violent” next installment in Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga. Farrell said in an interview with MovieZine:

“We completed the task, pal. We finished it off around two weeks back with a final touch. It was quite an extended and delightful journey.

The rule of the penguin starts on Thursday, September 19th, at 9 PM Eastern Daylight Time on HBO. The show features Cristin Milioti, Clancy Brown, Rehenzy Feliz, Michael Zegen, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael Kelly as co-stars. To note, this HBO Original is a follow-up series to the movie “The Batman” (2022), where Robert Pattinson led the cast.
