As a long-time fan of Batman and his dark, brooding world, I must say that the latest depiction of Arkham Asylum in The Penguin has certainly piqued my interest. Having spent countless hours exploring the gothic halls of Arkham in video games, it’s refreshing to see a more realistic take on the institution.
Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” world has taken fans by storm, with many considering it one of the finest portrayals of the character in cinema history when it debuted in 2022. Initially, Robert Pattinson’s casting as Bruce Wayne faced criticism, but the film proved to be a hit, even rivaling Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”. One of the three initially announced spin-off series, titled “The Penguin“, has also been extremely successful. Airing weekly on HBO Max and other platforms, “The Penguin” has earned comparisons to “The Sopranos” and is widely regarded as one of the best superhero TV shows ever produced.
Regrettably, only The Penguin made it through the development stage for Matt Reeves’ proposed spin-offs of The Batman. A series based on the Gotham City Police Department was unveiled alongside it, but ultimately didn’t move forward due to a lack of unique characters from the Batman universe. Similarly, a series set in the infamous Arkham Asylum (one of comic book lore’s most worthless prisons) was also announced and abandoned by Warner Bros. Fans were already disheartened by the early cancellations of both shows, but the latest episode of The Penguin has added to their disappointment by providing fans with a tantalizing glimpse at Matt Reeves’ interpretation of Arkham Asylum.

The Penguin’s Latest Episode Dives Deep Into Arkham Asylum
In “Cent’Anni,” the fourth episode of The Penguin, Sofia Falcone’s (Cristin Milioti) past unfolds as the highest-rated episode yet, boasting a 9.5 rating on IMDb. Instead of focusing on Oz Cobb’s (Colin Farrell) advancement in Gotham City’s criminal network, this installment delves into Sofia’s tumultuous relationship with her father, Carmine Falcone (Mark Strong). After accusing him of killing her mother, Sofia is sent to Arkham Asylum for what was initially a six-month stay. However, this confinement in Gotham’s infamous asylum stretches into a decade-long ordeal.
Fans familiar with The Batman have previously encountered Arkham Asylum. In director Reeves’ initial film, The Riddler (Paul Dano) was confined there following his plot, while a cut scene depicted an early version of The Joker (Barry Keoghan) conversing with Batman within the prison. However, neither scene delved into Arkham as deeply as The Penguin does in this movie. We see Sofia’s descent as she is humiliated by being stripped, sprayed, and given a uniform before being locked up. The film then exposes grisly scenes involving a violent inmate and Sofia’s psychotic cellmate (later identified as the comic book villain Magpie). “Cent’Anni” provides one of the most intriguing glimpses into Arkham Asylum from any live-action Batman production, sparking a strong desire among fans for the Arkham Asylum show to be reinstated.
What the Arkham Asylum Spin-Off Can Take From The Penguin
Fans of Batman need not be too disheartened, for the Arkham Asylum series is still in progress, though perhaps not exactly as initially planned. Matt Reeves, the director, has confirmed that a revamped spin-off is still underway. He likened it to a journey rather than an unsuccessful venture, stating that it’s “more about something that is still along a path toward arriving at its destination.” Consequently, the upcoming series will likely draw inspiration from The Penguin’s portrayal of Arkham Asylum.
Arkham Asylum has been a frequent setting in various Batman stories, including Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and the popular Arkham series of video games. However, the portrayal of Arkham in The Penguin stands out from these other versions. Just like its peculiar inhabitants, visual representations of Arkham Asylum can sometimes be quite extravagant. In many cases, the Arkham video games and comics have showcased the gothic architecture of Gotham City, allowing players and readers to explore a detailed version of the high-security prison complete with gargoyles and spires. This representation of Arkham is common in both the video games and comic books, featuring decaying walls and rusty bars inside.
As a die-hard fan of Batman’s dark and gritty world, I can’t help but marvel at the chilling depiction of Arkham in the video games. It’s not hard to imagine how his rogue’s gallery could repeatedly break out from such a place. However, the Arkham portrayed in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe feels more like a brutal, high-security super-max prison. Consequently, if given a chance, the Arkham Asylum series could transform into a gripping, escape-themed show reminiscent of ‘Prison Break’, with its inmates constantly trying to break free from this impenetrable fortress.
Beyond merely emulating Arkham’s visual aesthetic, the spin-off series can draw inspiration from its mood, ambiance, and demeanor, much like in “The Batman.” The Penguin, as demonstrated in his latest episode, masterfully uses sound to intensify audiences, mirroring Sofia’s fear and anxiety within Arkham. It is suggested that the Arkham Asylum series emulate this tense, deteriorating prison atmosphere where violence simmers beneath the surface, waiting to erupt at any moment. Although specific details about the revamped Arkham Asylum series are yet to be revealed, given its connection to “The Batman,” fans eagerly anticipate revisiting the expanded Arkham depicted in The Penguin’s recent episode.
