Ever since “The Penguin” wrapped up in November 2024, fans have been eagerly wondering if there will be a Season 2. The Golden Globes event last night has brought us closer to an answer, as executive producer Dylan Clark and showrunner Lauren LeFranc shared some intriguing insights about the future of this popular HBO series. In this show, Colin Farrell brilliantly played the lead character. “The Penguin” received widespread acclaim from both viewers and critics, with Farrell himself winning Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film at last night’s ceremony.
According to TV Line, The Penguin was initially planned as a single season series with no follow-up expected. However, the favorable reviews have put HBO in a tricky position because it’s evident that viewers are eager for more of Oswald Cobblepot on their screens. Although there have been whispers about its future, no formal decisions have been announced, but as per Clark, the talks continue – though they’re happening discreetly.
If we manage to brainstorm an idea for a potential second season, there’s a possibility that Casey Bloys and the HBO team might be interested in moving forward with it. There have been some discreet discussions about this possibility.
Last night, “The Penguin” was up for the Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film award, but it lost to Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Cristin Milioti received a nomination in the Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film category, with Jodie Foster taking home the prize for “True Detective: Night Country.” Despite not winning, it’s evident that “The Penguin” has been a success on HBO, making it smart to keep going. LeFranc, the creator of “The Penguin,” remains optimistic about its future and thinks there are definitely more stories to be told about this disfigured crime boss.
I’m incredibly pleased with our first season and the story we crafted, as our series was designed to be a limited one. There are certainly more stories waiting to be told within this universe, if only we can come up with the perfect concept or characters. As of now, I’m unsure about future installments, but I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished.
How Does ‘The Penguin’ Season 2 Affect the Matt Reeves ‘Batman’ Universe?
Although conversations about Season 2 of “The Penguin” appear to be purely speculative at this stage, the consensus seems to lean towards it becoming a reality given all the rumors. Notably, director Matt Reeves of “The Batman” has admitted that talks are underway, which raises an intriguing question: how might these discussions influence “The Batman Part II”?
Currently, there’s no sign of Season 2 for “The Penguin” as its release date is set for October 1, 2027. This means that if a second season does materialize, it might not air until at least 2028. However, there’s a possibility that the production team could expedite things and bring back the series before then. Since Farrell has already committed to playing the role in a feature film, we can assume he won’t be killed off prior to the sequel’s premiere, assuming he returns to HBO earlier than expected.
Undeniably, it’s a substantial amount of content, but given the popularity of “The Penguin“, it’s an enviable situation to be in if you’re considering watching it. If you’ve been eagerly waiting, now might be the perfect moment to stream all eight episodes on “Max” and witness Farrell’s critically acclaimed performance. Keep an eye out for him later this year as well, in the upcoming romantic fantasy “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey“, set to hit screens on May 9th.
