As a die-hard fan of Batman and someone who can vividly recall watching Batman Forever six times at the tender age of ten, I wholeheartedly agree with Cristin Milioti‘s sentiments about the film. While it might not have been universally loved back then, its campy charm and larger-than-life appeal made a lasting impression on me.
Star Milioti, who’s now a part of the DC universe as Sofia Falcone in the Batman series, has defended one of the franchise’s most debated movies – Batman Forever from 1995. In a chat with film critic Rad Simonpillai, she expressed her fondness for this more contentious chapter in the saga, confessing that she used to be deeply fascinated by the whimsical Joel Schumacher sequel.
I watched Batman Forever around age ten, and it made quite an impression on me compared to the Tim Burton films. Instead of being captivated by those movies, I became utterly enthralled with Batman Forever. It seemed thrilling and exciting, and had a cartoony feel to it, with larger-than-life, neon elements. Everyone involved seemed to be giving their all, especially Jim Carrey’s Riddler character. While it might not be as acclaimed by others – I understand this completely – for me at age ten, it was incredibly captivating.
Under the guidance of director Joel Schumacher, this film features Val Kilmer portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Jim Carrey in the role of Edward Nygma/The Riddler, Nicole Kidman as Dr. Chase Meridian, and Chris O’Donnell as Dick Grayson/Robin. The sequel unfolds as Batman endeavors to foil the malevolent schemes of both Two-Face and The Riddler while maintaining his secret persona, all while mentoring a new protege.
Though it’s not the most disliked Batman film (that title goes to the 1997 sequel, Batman & Robin), Batman Forever faced heavy criticism when it was released due to its departure from the dark and gothic style of Tim Burton’s movies. However, what was once deemed “cartoony” has resonated with viewers like Milioti, leading to a cult following for the film. Even an online movement, pushing for the release of the Schumacher Cut, has emerged.
Joining the DC Universe Has Been a Long-Held Lifelong Dream for Cristin Milioti
As a long-time Batman enthusiast, I used to have a soft spot for the whimsical and exaggerated style of “Batman Forever”. However, when it comes to the contemporary DC productions like “The Penguin“, it’s all about the brooding atmosphere. In an exclusive interview with Collider, Cristin Milioti confessed that being a part of the DC universe finally brought a “lifelong dream” to fruition for her.
To be completely honest, I must admit that it was an incredible experience for me. Growing up, I was a die-hard Batman fan, and I watched every single Batman movie. I even made my father take me to see Batman Forever no less than six times! For Halloween, I dressed as Catwoman. My fascination with Batman was profound, and playing a character like this in the same universe has been a dream of mine for a lifetime. Now, there were certainly challenging days, but overall, I had an absolutely amazing time. It felt almost surreal, even during the scenes where I was thrown against walls, handcuffed, or endured some rough treatment. In truth, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
In a continuation of events from the highly praised 2022 DC film “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell re-adopts his character Oz Cobb in the movie titled “The Penguin“. This new production serves as a spinoff and sequel, focusing on the DC villain’s journey from a small-time crook to the powerful criminal mastermind of Gotham City. Joining Farrell in the main cast, The Penguin features Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, daughter of crime boss Carmine Falcone; Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, another mob boss and gangster; Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, son of Carmine Falcone; and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Cobblepot’s driver. The ensemble also includes Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes, and Mark Strong.
In contrast to “Batman Forever,” which was released earlier, “The Penguin” debuted on HBO on September 19, 2024, and received widespread praise from critics.
