As a movie critic with a penchant for both big-budget productions and scrappy indies, I must admit that Michael Beach’s dual performances in “The Perfect Couple” and “I’ll Be Right There” have left me utterly charmed. The former, with its star-studded cast and exorbitant budget, is like a grand ballroom dance, while the latter is a heartwarming backyard BBQ conversation between old friends.
We spoke to actor Michael Beach amid the release of I’ll Be Right There, his new indie film where he plays an old pal of Edie Falco’s leading-lady character. It’s a platonic, endearing rapport between two middle-aged do-gooders, a different dynamic than the secrets and lies in his other newly released project, The Perfect Couple, which just debuted on Netflix. The series also stars the reliably excellent Liev Schreiber, who has a fun little real-life connection to Beach. It may not be the same “endearing” rapport as with Falco, but it’s a fun one.
Beach explained that “Liev attended Yale and I went to Julliard,” creating an instant sense of friendly competition or playful rivalry. This was because the two institutions were once considered rivals, although this isn’t as common nowadays. However, they didn’t attend school at the same time. Beach is a bit older than Liev, and it was amusing. He also mentioned:
We really enjoyed ourselves during filming as there was a scene where the ending was uncertain – it could have been his final line or mine. Occasionally, he would get the closing line, while at other times, I did. When the director called ‘cut,’ Liev would often say, ‘Ah, you got me there, Julliard!’ To which I’d reply, ‘Ah OK, yeah, I see you, I see you!’ It was all very entertaining.
The Big-Budget Perfect Couple vs. His Scrappy New Indie
In the movie titled “The Perfect Couple“, boasting an impressive ensemble beyond the duo from Juilliard and Yale, there’s even an Oscar-winning actress like Nicole Kidman. During our conversation, Beach shared his thoughts, saying, “Working with Nicole was fantastic. She’s truly talented.” He added, “We share some intimate scenes together that are quite moving. And overall, it was a unique experience. It was a bit different because the production had a substantial budget.
Beach continued:
After returning to a project like “I’ll Be Right There“, where the financial rewards may be limited, but the talent involved – I’m working alongside Edie Falco, Bradley Whitford, and Michael Rapaport, to name a few – is exceptional in unique ways. You have Netflix, the streaming giant, backing it, yet you also have an independent film that could prove challenging to distribute. Despite these obstacles, the value, quality, and overall experience of this project remains incredibly rewarding.
