As someone who often finds myself lost in the digital abyss of endless scrolling, I find the Phase lamp by Relative Distance to be a breath of fresh air. The idea of reconnecting with something as fundamental and awe-inspiring as the moon’s orbit is nothing short of captivating.
Most of us often find ourselves mindlessly using our phones for extended periods while scrolling through various content, unaware of how much time has slipped away. In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in distractions, and before we know it, whole hours have disappeared.
However, the Phase Lamp, created by London-based studio Relative Distance, attempts to revive our understanding of lunar cycles by reflecting the moon’s actual movement around the Earth.
According to Roland Ellis, one of the studio’s founders, our bond with the moon goes beyond what we can fully comprehend. The product named ‘Phase’ enables users to forge a link with something that significantly impacts our lives. It provides a feeling of tranquility and connection, making it an item we aim for people to not just own but live with.
Four years back, we started developing Phase, a project that doesn’t capture its own lunar image but instead uses a NASA photograph from 2014. This picture was made by combining around 15,000 wide-angle photos taken of the moon’s near side.
As someone who has always been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe, I find this lamp to be nothing short of a marvel. The image etched onto smoked glass, backed by a case made from mineral composite, gives it an otherworldly feel that perfectly complements its celestial features.
According to Dev Joshi, we’ve dedicated four years to refining materials and lighting, designing electronics and power distribution to achieve an incredibly slim appearance for our piece. This aligns with our design philosophy of minimizing the object’s form to maximize its impact. It’s quite astonishing, as if you were seeing a real moon hanging on a wall.
During this year’s London Design Festival starting on September 14th, the captivating Phase lamp from Relative Distance’s London workshop will be displayed. Each lamp is individually crafted in their studio, and they come in two sizes: 60cm and 120cm, available for purchase.
