Enthusiasts of the movie “Frozen” have much to anticipate in the upcoming years. At D23 last year, it was officially announced that not only was a third installment planned for release, but a fourth one too. However, the waiting time for these films might be long for fans. The third film, “Frozen 3“, is scheduled for a 2027 premiere. Josh Gad, one of the voices in the series, has provided an understandable reason for this delay.
It’s uncertain if we could watch Frozen 3 ahead of schedule, but Josh Gad is fine with the wait because he claims everyone involved in the project is taking their time to ensure it meets expectations. During an interview on The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw (as reported by People), Gad refrained from disclosing specifics about the upcoming film, but emphasized that the delay is due to a focus on delivering a high-quality product. As stated by Josh Gad…
Anything I’ve witnessed or learned about is under a vow of silence. Here’s what I can disclose, though: The reason for the film’s release in 2027 is not due to haste, but rather a desire to avoid rushing it. The aim isn’t merely to produce another sequel or cash in, but to create something truly deserving of the tale we embarked upon in 2013 with the first Frozen movie.
It makes perfect sense that the creators of Frozen 3, notably director Jennifer Lee who now oversees the franchise, would prefer to move slowly. After all, animated films often undergo numerous adjustments during production. Stories like that of Toy Story 4, which went through significant changes in search of the right narrative, are not uncommon. The documentary ‘Into the Unknown’ revealed that parts of Frozen II didn’t solidify until late in development. Disney aims to provide the same opportunity for Frozen III to discover its own identity.
The upcoming third installment of “Frozen” undeniably faces high expectations. The original film broke records as the highest-grossing animated movie upon release, maintaining its position until the arrival of “Frozen 2”. Now, the franchise’s success for Disney is unprecedented, with massive sales of merchandise featuring Anna, Elsa, and Olaf. There’s so much “Frozen” themed content at Walt Disney World that a whole day could be spent exploring it all.
Initially, when it was officially announced that both “Frozen 3” and “Zootopia 2” would be produced, fans assumed that one of these films would hit theaters in 2025, while the other would follow in 2026. Subsequently, “Zootopia 2” was scheduled for Disney Animation’s 2025 release, but at D23 in August, Jennifer Lee confirmed that “Frozen 3” would debut in 2027, with a yet-to-be-named original Disney project taking its place in the 2026 schedule.
Over the coming years, you’ll have numerous opportunities to appreciate the magic of Frozen before Frozen 3 is released. By subscribing to Disney+, you can revisit the initial two films, a few animated shorts, and TV specials as many times as you like. Additionally, you could take a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland and explore the Frozen World, which debuted last year. Another similar area will be unveiled at Disneyland Paris in 2026.
