Kaos”, an innovative reimagining of Roman mythology, brings characters such as Zeus and Persephone into our contemporary world, setting them in conflict with humans over the course of their future. Despite high expectations, this series on Netflix concluded after only one season. The lackluster buzz during awards season and merely satisfactory viewership ratings appear to have contributed to its downfall, and even positive critical feedback could not prevent its cancellation.
In this series, three individuals find themselves linked through a prophecy given by Prometheus (Stephen Dillane), who seeks to escape his confinement at the hands of the almighty Zeus (acting legend Jeff Goldblum). The objective of Prometheus is to exact revenge on Zeus by unleashing the titular entity known as Kaos, which would lead to the fall of the divine rulers and secure his freedom. As Zeus becomes aware that his time is running out, so does the life of his family, spiraling into turmoil and disorder.
Featuring renowned actors like Janet McTeer, Suzy Eddie Izzard, and others, the show quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched series, spending four weeks in the top 10. It accumulated a total of 22.8 million viewing hours during this timeframe, which might initially seem surprising considering its cancellation. However, it’s important to note that while it reached a high of 39.2 million hours viewed in its second week, viewership plummeted significantly afterward. The series’ production cost, reportedly over $58 million, could have played a significant role in its cancellation, alongside the viewing figures. Despite audiences seemingly losing interest in “Kaos,” critics generally appreciated it.
Kaos had decent critical acclaim
A compelling Netflix series like “Kaos” thrives on positive critical reception to maintain its popularity. Remarkably, “Kaos” received a 77% “Fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes, indicating general approval among critics. Critics who enjoyed the show were captivated by its flair and finesse, with Hannah Giorgis from The Atlantic describing it as “an engaging, visually striking narrative that sheds light on timeless moral dilemmas and character analyses – all while maintaining a sense of humor.
Criticisms leveled at “Kaos” often pointed out its struggle to establish a unique identity. For instance, Slant Magazine’s Ross Mcindoe expressed his view that the series lacked a strong and consistent internal logic necessary to thrive as an adult fantasy series. The Hollywood Reporter was particularly critical, stating that the world of “Kaos” felt smaller and less rich, making it too mature for young viewers yet not sophisticated enough for adults.
It’s usually disappointing when a series ends shortly after its debut, and while there’s a small possibility that “Kaos” could be revived in the future, for now, if people recall it, it may be remembered as a daring, intriguing failure in television history.
