I, Owen Hendricks, CIA lawyer, found myself back in Season 2 of Netflix’s thrilling series, “The Recruit”. This new chapter was brimming with the same intricate twists, heart-stopping action scenes, and global escapades as before. Just like the previous season, I found myself in perilous situations as I embarked on a mission that took me to South Korea, all while keeping a keen eye on troubles brewing closer to home. When my divided focus started causing issues, the idea of working with Nichka Lashin, Max’s daughter, didn’t seem so unwelcome after all.

In the initial season of the television show, the character previously known as Karolina, now called Nichka, entered under the pseudonym Marta, portraying a Russian mafia associate. The dynamics between Owen and Nichka deteriorate when she attempts to charm him, only to find out that he has been collaborating with her mother, CIA agent Max Meladze (Laura Haddock). Unbeknownst to Max, she thought her daughter was no longer alive. A confrontation involving gunfire erupted among the three, culminating in Nichka fatally shooting her own mother at the close of Season 1.

In a crucial moment when Owen was about to be harmed, Dawn (Angel Parker) intervened and saved him. During the second season, Nichka and Owen initially clashed but joined forces for a fresh mission. However, the outcome of Nichka’s storyline in Season 2 remains uncertain, hinting at possible continuation in Season 3 – although Netflix has not confirmed whether the show will resume.

Nichka’s Ambiguous Fate Hints at ‘The Recruit’ Returning for a Third Season

In Season 2 of “The Recruit”, Nichka is now a CIA asset due to her past connections with the Russian mafia, which caught the attention of the government agency as a potential informant. The CIA extended an offer to her, which she accepted for financial security and protection. Throughout the series, Nichka reconnects with Owen in a joint mission to locate Jang Kyu’s (Teo Yoo) abducted wife by the Japanese mob in Russia. Upon completion of the mission, the tension between Owen and Nichka resurfaces, and it is disclosed that her intention had been to betray Owen all along.

In a twist of events, Dawn’s strategy included surrendering Owen to the Russians, but the reasons behind this aren’t entirely clear, likely driven by a desire for additional wealth and an opportunity to reclaim her old lifestyle. However, things take a turn when Dawn is instructed by the CIA director to assassinate Owen. Nichka steps in to sabotage the CIA operation and eliminates Dawn instead. Once again, Owen narrowly escapes death, indicating that Nichka’s scheme was unsuccessful, and she couldn’t fulfill her commitment to the Russians. As a result, the Russian agents apprehend Nichka, leaving her whereabouts and wellbeing uncertain for the rest of the season. This ambiguity about her fate paves the way for a possible comeback of her character in The Recruit Season 3.

‘The Recruit’ Season 3 Can Avoid This Big Mistake From Season 2

Although Netflix hasn’t officially announced the third season of The Recruit yet, showrunners might use this gap to reconsider the series’ main oversight – the insufficient exploration of Max’s death in Season 1. As Nichka was the one who killed Max and has been a significant character since the first season, the show now has an opportunity to rectify this mistake by delving deeper into her past. There are many unresolved questions about her background that could be intriguing for both her character development and viewers. Leaving these mysteries unanswered would not only be detrimental to Nichka’s character but also disappoint the audience who have followed the series since its beginning.

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but reflect on the intriguing dynamic between Max and Nichka that was hinted at in Season 1. Their complex, unresolved relationship, particularly in light of Max being Nichka’s mother, offers fertile ground for further exploration. The finale suggested this would be a pivotal plot point in the latest season, but the narrative unexpectedly shifted towards Owen and his new mission, while introducing fresh characters instead.

However, the compelling cliffhanger at the end of Season 2 strongly suggests that the series will return for another season. Here’s hoping that Nichka’s character will be delved into more deeply in the upcoming seasons, providing a rich backdrop for thought-provoking storylines.

Breaking the Habit of Short Seasons

Over the last few years, television series production in the film industry has shifted, reducing the number of episodes per season. Previously, it was common to have at least 18 episodes in a single season. Today, viewers often find themselves watching only 10 episodes per season. This reduction in episode count leads to a faster pace and potential loss of storylines, which can disrupt the flow and coherence of the overall narrative.

By introducing Nichka’s narrative arc, “The Recruit” can help mend the pacing issue in the series where it rapidly shifts from one storyline to another without fully exploring events from the previous season. With its recent success as a Top 10 show on Netflix, there’s enormous potential for the series. However, if they don’t take steps to rectify these issues, the show may risk losing viewers. “The Recruit” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
