The Rings of Power Showrunner on the Contradictions of Tolkiens Own Second Age Stories

As a lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, I must admit that my initial skepticism about “The Rings of Power” was palpable. The show seemed to stray too far from the familiar paths of the original tales, and I found myself yearning for a more faithful adaptation. However, as a seasoned viewer who has weathered countless adaptations, reboots, and remakes, I’ve learned to keep an open mind and give new interpretations a chance.

The showrunners have been facing strong resistance from dedicated Tolkien fans, who argue that the series doesn’t adhere to the established lore of the franchise as set by the author. However, co-showrunner Patrick McKay has offered a different perspective, explaining that the decision to set the series during the Second Age of Middle Earth was influenced by Tolkien’s ambiguous and occasionally conflicting writings about the era in his appendices for The Lord of the Rings.

In an in-depth discussion about the second season of The Rings of Power with Deadline, co-creators Patrick McKay and JD Payne explained various aspects of the newest season, such as their decision to center the Second Age of Tolkien’s grand tale.

1. “Our affection for this world, Middle-earth, and those stories is immense. That’s why we decided to craft a tale during this specific period of Middle-earth’s history, as Tolkien never finalized a definitive account of it. His notes, timelines, and occasional contradictions are scattered here and there. In essence, we’re more asking for forgiveness than permission in the sense that we believe we can create an epic tale within this era that evokes the feelings you associate with Lord of the Rings – the adventure, the pacing, the suspense, the visual spectacle, world-building, and politics, as well as the psychological depth that JD mentioned.”

The Rings of Power Has Divided Fans, but is a Massive Success

Although some Tolkien enthusiasts and experts are not entirely satisfied with how The Rings of Power is unfolding, Prime Video will not be displeased by the buzz surrounding the series or the massive audience it continues to attract, particularly with the release of Season 2. In fact, the show has regained the number one position on their platform during the week prior to the new season, making it nearly unbeatable at the top of the ratings for the near future.

The second installment of The Rings of Power has been met with significantly more favorable responses compared to its predecessor, as evidenced by nearly double the audience’s Rotten Tomatoes score. Furthermore, critics have continued to laud the series, validating Amazon’s reported $1 billion investment as a savvy and profitable decision. While a considerable portion of Season 1 focused on introducing viewers to this adaptation of Tolkien’s world, resulting in some criticisms about slow pacing, Season 2 began with a chilling flashback depicting Sauron’s return to Middle Earth, and has swiftly advanced several storylines, hinting at more exciting developments ahead.

Apart from the whole first season, the opening three installments of Season 2 are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Fresh episodes will drop every week in September, culminating in the season’s grand finale on October 3rd.
