As a movie critic with over three decades of immersion in the magical realm of Middle-earth, I must say that the decision to exclude Gollum from The Rings of Power is as disheartening as a Dwarven ale without any alewife’s honey.
In the second season of “The Rings of Power”, a well-known wizard from the initial Lord of the Rings trilogy made an appearance, however, fans should not anticipate another significant character from the film series to feature in the Amazon Prime Video program. The recently aired season saw Sauron furthering his ambition to rule Middle-earth and using the enchanted rings as a means to set its civilizations against each other. As we eagerly await confirmation for Season 3, the creators of this popular streaming series have disclosed that their beloved character, Gollum, will not be featured in “The Rings of Power”.
In a Reddit Q&A, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were asked about parts from The Lord of the Rings canon that won’t feature in the upcoming seasons of “The Rings of Power.” While Payne hinted at several elements they plan to introduce, McKay directly stated that one of his favorite characters, Gollum, will not appear in the streaming series.
I don’t have any suggestions beyond saying that Gollum is one of my favorite characters from the legendarium. He’s incredibly intricate and multi-faceted, but I can’t envision a scenario where we’d utilize him in our series, not even at the very end. It’s unfortunate because he’s fantastic, yet perhaps it’s beneficial since he was portrayed so masterfully and memorably by Peter Jackson, his team, and Andy Serkis in the films. It feels like a toy that would be enjoyable to tinker with.
For longtime enthusiasts of the series, it won’t be unexpected that Gollum isn’t present in The Rings of Power. This is because the story unfolds during the Second Age, a time period thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and the emergence of Sméagol or Gollum. However, The Rings of Power hasn’t shied away from hopping between timelines occasionally, given the complexities and gaps in the canon. The series aims to shed light on a less explored part of Middle-earth history during the Second Age. Nevertheless, it’s uncertain if the ring-possessed creature will make an appearance on our screens anytime soon, but the absence of Gollum may not last much longer.
Gollum is Back on the Big Screen
Andy Serkis is slated to once more embody the character he made iconic in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy in an upcoming spinoff called The Hunt for Gollum. This new film marks the return of the long-running franchise to theaters, following the controversial Hobbit series where Gollum was also featured in a supporting role. Set before the events of Fellowship of the Ring, this prequel-like story may also introduce other well-known characters (*cough* Gandalf *cough*). Another film is also under wraps, but it’s being kept secret for now. The Rings of Power won’t include Gollum and others in its storyline, but fans won’t have to wait too long before they see Serkis reprise the role again.
While an official confirmation for Season 3 of “The Rings of Power” is yet to come from Amazon, there’s a strong possibility that it will renew the series this year, given its five-season commitment since the show was initially announced. Although some viewers are yet to be fully convinced by the series, it continues to break viewership records on Prime Video. On a different note, Warner Bros. is planning to challenge “The Rings of Power” with new Lord of the Rings films, one of which is the upcoming anime movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
