‘The Royal Ignore’: Days after season 2 announcement, Maharani of Baroda challenges misrepresentation in Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar’s show

On May 9, 2025, the series “The Royals,” featuring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar in prominent roles, debuted on Netflix. The show garnered a range of opinions from viewers and critics alike. More recently, the creators have announced a second season of “The Royals”, which has also sparked varied reactions among fans. Now, the Maharani of Baroda has spoken out on social media to address potential misunderstandings about the show.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad (Maharani of Baroda) shared her thoughts about the distorted representation of royal families in shows like “The Royals,” writing on Instagram, “Given the extensive documentation, photography, biographies, and current influence of Indian royals in various fields such as politics, hospitality, and media, one might assume they would be less susceptible to flawed depictions similar to those in ‘The Royals’.

After 1947, India’s monarchy, made up of 565 princely states, willingly gave up authority to establish a democratic country. While many rulers governed wisely and kindly, their influence is frequently overshadowed by outdated caricatures.

Radhika continued discussing the loss of their official powers, but despite this, royal families across the nation have been proactive in shaping cultural and social landscapes. She emphasized their significant impact on various sectors such as administration, hospitality, academia, and environmental preservation.

In addition, the Maharani of Baroda highlighted that members of royal families’ women are stepping into leadership positions, safeguarding their customs, celebrations, arts, and historical landmarks. While they no longer hold formal power, they remain influential and revered figures within the community, serving as a source of inspiration.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad ended her letter by discussing the younger generation, who, upon returning home after their education abroad, have actively continued the family legacy.

Sharing the long note, she captioned it, “What watching The Royals elicited in me…”

Currently, Netflix India shared on Instagram that there will be a second season of “The Royals”. They posted a picture of a throne, suggesting the return of Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar along with others. Accompanying the poster, they wrote, “Preparing for fresh power struggles, renewed alliances and a new chapter – The Royals Season 2 is on its way, exclusively on Netflix.

For those not in the know, The Royals was developed by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy. It’s helmed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana in the director’s chair.
