As a longtime fan who has followed Joey Bada$$ since his early days with Pro Era, I must say that “The Ruler’s Back” is a welcome surprise. It’s been a while since we’ve heard new music from him, and this track is a perfect reminder of why we fell in love with his unique style and flow in the first place. The retro soul sample gives it an old-school vibe, and Bada$$’ heavy-hitting bars are as sharp as ever.
I remember when I first heard “Survival Tactics” back in 2013, and it felt like he was speaking directly to me about the struggles of growing up in Brooklyn. His music has always resonated with me on a deep level, and “The Ruler’s Back” is no exception. It’s clear that Bada$$ is still the heir apparent king of NY, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next.
Oh, and let me tell you a little joke: What do you call Joey Bada$$ when he comes back with new music? The Ruler’s Return! (I hope that was funny.)
After releasing his third studio album 2000 in 2022, Joey Bada$$ has kept a low profile when it comes to his solo work. However, he recently made a comeback with “The Ruler’s Back,” which he unveiled on Instagram as his fourth studio single since the album.
Currently unavailable on Digital Streaming Platforms, “The Ruler’s Back” represents an electrifying new track where the rapper showcases powerful verses atop a rhythm crafted by Conductor Williams, featuring a classic soul sample with a nostalgic touch.
“I was observing quietly, waiting for a valid reason / Honestly, I’m ready to take action, I’m an East Coast guy till the end of my days / It’s obvious who the potential ruler of New York is, he says this at the end of his first verse.
Starting from its release in 2000, Bada$$ has put out songs like “Fallin’,” collaborations with KayCyy titled “Passportrs & Suitcases” and Chlöe on “TELL ME,” and also appeared on singles by Erick the Architect, Conway the Machine, IDK, BLK ODYSSY, Cordae, and Powers Pleasant.
Over the Christmas season, the rapper collaborated with Greg Yuna as part of the jeweler’s festive advertising campaign. They reenacted the well-known limousine scene from the movie “Home Alone 2” together.
Currently, the movie “The Ruler’s Back” is yet to be available on streaming platforms. However, you can listen to the song by watching the video provided above.
