Glen Powell is currently making strides towards becoming a prominent figure in Hollywood. He caught many people’s attention a few years back with his standout performance opposite Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick”, and since then, he has dazzled audiences in the romantic comedy “Anyone But You” and demonstrated a great deal of charm as a storm chaser in “Twisters”. He is currently demonstrating to movie-goers that he can excel at various roles, and I find it fascinating that director Edgar Wright has compared him to Bruce Willis before his iconic role in “Die Hard” for his upcoming part in “The Running Man“.
According to a preview published by Empire, the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Running Man,” won’t be released until November. However, the preview offers some intriguing insights from director Wright about Glen Powell, who plays the lead role. When Bruce Willis first appeared in the 1988 action film “Die Hard,” audiences were mainly familiar with him from his TV series “Moonlighting.” Similarly, Wright believes that Powell is emulating a similar vibe in his performance for the upcoming thriller.
I thought it was crucial to consult someone with little or no experience in such a task, as it would add an element of surprise and uncertainty, much like Bruce Willis before his Die Hard days when audiences wondered if he could pull it off.

5 Things Stephen King’s The Running Man Got Right About The Year 2025
2025 finds me reflecting on Bruce Willis’ illustrious career, where he was synonymous with unflappable action heroes. Yet, when Die Hard debuted, it wasn’t just the hardened action star that audiences related to; they found themselves invested in the fate of John McClane because they saw him as the witty, charming detective David Addison first.
As for Glen Powell, he’s shown us his prowess in flying jets and chasing tornadoes. But come 2025, there will be a lingering curiosity among movie-goers: can he endure racing through the tumultuous landscape of American society, with a colossal bullseye painted squarely on his back?
In contrast to the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man” is more aligned with the original book’s narrative. The protagonist in this story, Ben Richards, bears no resemblance to the muscular action hero portrayed by Schwarzenegger. Instead, Richards is a struggling man living in a dystopian society who is driven to participate in lethal television games as a means to obtain life-saving medicine for his ailing child.
In the movie “The Schwarzenegger Film,” the protagonist gets thrust into a labyrinth-like environment filled with lethal adversaries themed around various enemies. However, the original story is more realistic and depicts Ben Richards being set free in urban and suburban settings, where he’s both pursued by trained assassins and must be cautious because people are incentivized to reveal his whereabouts. This aspect of the story, specifically, caught Edgar Wright’s attention when discussing his take on “The Running Man” with Empire magazine, as he shared.
Among the aspects I appreciated in the book was the portrayal of Ben Richards navigating alone in the world, which gave off an intriguing vibe akin to the deadliest version of hide-and-seek you can imagine. It also seemed reminiscent of creating a road movie, but this one was intense and dangerous, with Ben passing through diverse landscapes and encountering various individuals while attempting to survive for 30 days in the wilderness.
In easy-to-understand language:
The movie titled “The Running Man” features an impressive ensemble cast including Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, William H. Macy, David Zayas, Jayme Lawson, and Colman Domingo. Production for this film started towards the end of last year. Coming after Osgood Perkins’ bloody and amusing “The Monkey” and Mike Flanagan’s “The Life Of Chuck”, it is set to be the third Stephen King movie to hit theaters in 2025, and will be available for viewing on the big screen everywhere starting November 7.
