The Russo Brothers are Open to Developing a Game Connected to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars

As the Netflix premiere of their “Electric State” movie draws near, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have unveiled that they’re also creating a companion mobile game titled “The Electric State: Kid Cosmo.” The game is rumored to be set before the events of the film, leaving fans wondering if a similar approach could be taken for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.

The Russo Brothers recently spoke with Variety regarding the launch of Kid Cosmo. During their discussion, they delved into various aspects of the game’s background, and when asked about potential future work on an Avengers game that aligns with the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Joe Russo indicated a willingness to explore such a project by saying, “We would certainly consider it.

Although the brothers remained vague about potential plans for an “Avengers” movie title, they clearly expressed their desired direction for video games under their brand, AGBO. Russo elaborates on this:

Currently, our focus at AGBO is developing fresh intellectual properties. Our aim is to share unique and unseen narratives through captivating stories, characters, and universes. To achieve this, Anthony, Donald, and I are collaborating to construct new cosmoses. At present, we’re cultivating three distinct worlds with the ambition that each world has the expansive richness of a Star Wars universe, but within different genres. Following the creation of these worlds, we plan to generate content suitable for various mediums within them.

Why Haven’t Fans Gotten a Good MCU Game?

Despite Marvel Games currently enjoying success with Marvel Rivals, longtime fans recall a period when Marvel struggled to launch any of its games successfully. A notable flop was the AAA Avengers game developed by Crystal Dynamics, which received such negative feedback that it even tarnished the reception of the critically acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy game.

In contrast to today, it was more economical and less challenging to create video games associated with big franchises like Marvel during the 2000s compared to the 2020s.

Or simply: It’s been tougher for major franchises like Marvel to produce successful tie-in games because game development has become costlier and more complex in recent years.

In today’s gaming world, creating a highly-rated spin-off game demands considerably more investment (and involves a greater degree of risk). This is why we haven’t yet witnessed a 2020s version similar to EA’s Lord of the Rings: Return of the King tie-in.

During Phase 1, efforts were made to create MCU games, including titles like Iron Man and Captain America. However, it appeared that the wisest decision for Marvel game development was to concentrate on mobile platforms instead.

What could an Avengers: Doomsday Game Look Like?

Incorporating the hero shooter style successfully with Marvel Rivals, it’s plausible that a simple transformation of Doomsday would likely result in a fighting game akin to Marvel vs. Capcom. The game would feature a vibrant cast of characters, and the story could be seamlessly presented through a slideshow format.

Absolutely, there’s the option for a puzzle game too, but given the size of the Marvel universe, some fans might prefer a more ‘immersive’ video game experience based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Russos eagerly anticipate the premiere of “The Electric State” on Netflix, scheduled for March 14. On the other hand, “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
