The Russo Brothers’ Electric State is Getting a Canon Game Prequel Called with Kid Cosmo

Instead of discontinuing tie-ins, the Russo Brothers, directors of “Avengers: Endgame,” aim to reintroduce them through their project titled “The Electric State: Kid Cosmo.

The game is described as a prequel to the storyline of the upcoming Netflix film “The Electric State,” providing additional context that enthusiasts of the movie might find intriguing.

The Electric State: Kid Cosmo

It appears that Kid Cosmo is one of the characters featured in the film, but it’s interesting to note that he initially served as a mascot for an old-school, low-resolution handheld video game. Coincidentally, this exact game will be available for you to play.

The official description reads:

Calling all gamers! Lend a hand to Kid Cosmo as you embark on a thrilling ’80s-themed puzzle adventure, teaming up with the dynamic duo: boy prodigy Chris and his older sister Michelle. Let’s get this game within a game started!

The game incorporates certain classic gaming aspects, yet it also weaves a tale centered around characters named Chris (portrayed by Woody Norman) and Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), which unfolds in time periods prior to the movie’s main storyline.

Talking to Variety, Anthony Russo describes the story:

The game offers an extension to the bond between the main characters Michelle and her brother Chris, delving into aspects of their relationship not shown in the movie. This exploration spans periods before and after the events depicted in the film, thus providing a deeper understanding of their connection.

The movie delves deeply into the connection between characters, yet due to its two-hour format, not every aspect of their story can be fully explored. However, the game offers a unique opportunity to delve deeper into their identities, relationships, and how they change over time. I believe this complex sibling relationship will resonate with many viewers, as it’s filled with warmth, complications, and real-life dynamics.

Could Kid Cosmos Set the Standard for an Avengers MCU Game?

For the creative team at AGBO, led by the Russo Brothers, Kid Cosmos represents uncharted ground. However, they aim to broaden their horizons and venture into video game development as they progress with their story-driven initiatives in the future.

The Russos are at present engaged in the production of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, and they’ve expressed interest in creating a game associated with these movies. However, as of now, it appears that they don’t have definitive plans for such a project.

As “Doomsday” is scheduled for release next year, games that share a narrative link with the film might turn out to be formulaic puzzle games or straightforward visual novels, similar to a popular Japanese dating simulation.

Why They Don’t Make Tie-In Games Anymore

In the past, it was quite typical to see tie-in games in the gaming industry’s early days. However, due to rising costs and increased risk factors, producing such games in the 2020s has become less feasible. At most, modern video game tie-ins for properties are essentially re-skinned versions of puzzle games or any genre that a relatively small team can create.

In the 2000s, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was a massive success among gamers, but it’s unlikely we’ll see a similar game today. The developers behind the Dune game, Dune: Awakening, faced an enormous amount of work that caused them to miss their deadlines. Unfortunately, by the time they released the game, both Dune movies had already been shown in theaters. Their initial plan was to launch Awakening between the films, but things didn’t go as planned.

Returning to Kid Cosmo, it seems the Russos are giving it a try with this game. Perhaps its success will be realized when it’s released later in the month.

On March 18, the movie adaptation of “Kid Cosmo: The Electric State” will be available for streaming on both iOS and Android devices through Netflix. Ahead of that, the movie itself, titled simply “The Electric State,” is set to premiere four days earlier on March 14.
