Enthusiasts are thrilled about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role and potentially Chris Evans might join him. Yet, an equally significant piece of information is that Joe and Anthony Russo will be back at the helm, directing the two most prominent upcoming Marvel films on the schedule – Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Initially, the Russo Brothers had signaled their departure from the Marvel Universe after the release of Endgame (now available on Disney+), so it was quite unexpected when they announced their return. In an interview with Empire magazine, the Russos clarified that they were indeed serious about leaving, but they continued to discuss potential projects with Marvel Studios executives Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito. Over time, they stumbled upon an idea that ignited their enthusiasm so much that they couldn’t resist getting back involved. Anthony Russo elaborated…
After the conclusion of Endgame, it took some time for us to stop viewing it as merely an ending. We have a close relationship with Kevin Feige, Lou D’Esposito, and the entire Marvel Studios team, and over the years, we’ve shared numerous ideas with them. However, one particular idea caught our attention unexpectedly. It wasn’t something we could predict would arise, but when it did, we knew immediately that it was a story we needed to share.
The concept originated from Steven McFeely, a writer who collaborated with Christopher Markus on multiple Marvel films, including the latest Avengers projects directed by the Russos. However, it’s important to note that just because the idea came from him doesn’t necessarily mean he immediately agreed to write the film. In fact, Joe Russo revealed that when the possibility of McFeely writing the movie was first proposed, the writer flatly rejected the suggestion using very clear language.
Previously, there had been concepts that we struggled to comprehend, but we never managed to piece together a suitable narrative. I recall chatting with Steve, saying, “Hey, here’s a wild thought. What if we all revisit Secret Wars?” His response was, “Absolutely not, are you crazy?” The next day, at 7:30, he called back and said, “Alright, I have an idea.
It’s likely that Steven McFeely wasn’t particularly thrilled about penning the upcoming films on his own, as Christopher Markus won’t be collaborating with him this time around. However, having the majority of the team back together seems fitting, reminiscent of the Avengers coming back together again.
It’s a bit unclear what the idea being proposed entails, as our current knowledge about projects like “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars” is rather scant. If it manages to generate enough intrigue for people to want to come back, then it could potentially be something extraordinary.
