Netflix’s psychological thriller “The Sand Castle” goes beyond typical deserted-island survival tales. Similar to previous entries such as “LOST” and “Sweethheart”, it features characters battling extreme conditions, devising ways to leave, and experiencing strange occurrences. However, unlike its counterparts, Netflix’s Lebanese drama uses these elements as a setting to delve into the complexities of a troubled mind.
Under Matty Brown’s guidance, who is recognized for his short films including The Distraction and The Sand Castle, we find ourselves following a stranded family of four on an isolated island in the Mediterranean Sea. Their only solace lies in a functioning lighthouse that offers them shelter and a glimmer of hope for rescue. Yet, as days stretch on without any news from outside, their survival becomes precarious, causing tension to escalate. The once peaceful haven subtly unveils a startling truth.
Moreover, as the movie unfolds, the real facts surrounding the family’s predicament become more and more obscured due to the vivid imagination of their youngest member, Jana (Riman Al Rafeea). Consequently, by the final scene, it may be challenging to discern what truly occurred (or if any events transpired at all). Here is a clear summary of The Sand Castle, its concluding moments, and the eventual destinies of its resilient characters.
The Island: Blurring Reality with Imagination
The film opens by showing Jana enjoying herself on an island. She sees it as a peaceful sanctuary for her, her mother Yasmine (Nadine Labaki), father Nabil (Ziad Bakri), and brother Adam (Zain Al Rafeea). A lighthouse serves as their home base. To Jana, the island is whatever she wants it to be, a place where she can build sandcastles and pretend. However, her family sees their predicament more clearly – they understand the gravity of their situation, which forms the main storyline.
As the movie unfolds, bizarre incidents start happening that leave viewers questioning what’s real. Most strikingly, when I was meticulously excavating my sandcastle, I stumbled upon a gigantic yellow raft. Upon puncturing it, the lighthouse lost power. In a flash, I covered the raft with sand again and walked off as if I were concealing some secret rule infringement. This scene is filled with mysteries: why was the raft buried in the first place? How does it affect the power supply? And why did I hide my discovery when I’ve been so forthcoming about everything else?
Starting from now on, the audience will witness an increasing number of puzzling incidents. For instance, Jana pursues a vague shadow that seems to be creeping over her artwork in the lighthouse. Nabil experiences an enigmatic underwater assault. A solitary red shoe is discovered and buried. Yasmine has visions of Jana drowning. Adam witnesses a television descending from the sky. As the island grows increasingly unsteady, it becomes challenging to distinguish reality from illusion. However, considering that Jana views the place as a protective entity, viewers can infer that these occurrences might not be real at all. In fact, the island is an extension of Jana’s imagination; its peculiarities represent her memories seeping into her fictional realm.
What Really Happened to Jana and Her Family?
Given that the island is merely a creation of Jana’s mind, it becomes challenging to conclusively predict the outcome for her and her family. On-screen, we witness the parents perish, Nabil falls victim to his wounds and hallucinations, while Yasmine meets her end by attempting to rescue what she believes is Jana in distress, calling out from the sea.
As the movie reaches its finale, only Adam and Jana remain, with Adam assuming responsibility for their survival. He repairs the lighthouse, contacts help via radio, and uses kites to signal rescue. However, when Adam spots a boat in the distance, he ventures out swimming and doesn’t come back. The reason for his decision remains obscure, but it’s likely that he didn’t survive the journey. Alone now, Jana can only watch as the sea gradually engulfs the island.
By the movie’s end, fragments of memories of Jana in her native land are depicted on screen, revealing a school explosion, the bloodied shoe of her sister Yara, and scenes of a youth marred by war. This suggests that the enigmatic qualities of the island and its peculiar occurrences stem from Jana’s harrowing past experiences. Having fled actual conflict, she also mentally escapes into a fantasy realm – finding solace in this imagined sanctuary from her harsh reality.
At the closing moments, The Sand Castle depicts Jana peacefully drifting on a recognizable yellow raft, decorated with flag-like streamers. A beacon of light, reminiscent of the one from the lighthouse, approaches from a rescue boat nearby. As the camera focuses on Jana’s startled expression, the scene fades to black. Though the filmmakers do not explicitly verify if this sequence is real or a figment of Jana’s imagination, viewers are aware that the hardships she endured prior to this moment are undeniably true.
The Horrors of War
As a movie enthusiast, I found “The Sand Castle” captivating due to its unique storytelling technique. Before the final credits rolled, the filmmakers took a moment to clarify their purpose for us viewers. Their closing statement was poignant: “Approximately 500 million children worldwide endure life in conflict zones, living under constant fear and witnessing severe human rights violations such as forced displacement, which significantly affects their mental health. This film is a tribute to all the children who find solace in their imagination as a means of survival.
The movie’s enigmatic conclusion, similar to puzzling finishes like those in Inception and Birdman, plays a crucial role in its message. Whether Jana and her family actually survived on the island or not is irrelevant. What truly matters is that the film powerfully portrays the harsh realities of war, the mental toll it takes on individuals, pushing them to lose touch with reality, and the tragic plight of innocent children who are forced to grow up too fast in such circumstances. All they can do is escape into their imaginary worlds for comfort. Just as we may never know if Jana survived on that raft, we will never fully understand the countless lives lost needlessly due to warfare.
