From the Spring equinox to the Fall equinox, the second installment of the Solar Biennale “Soleil·s” is back at the mudac (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts) in Switzerland. This event highlights groundbreaking solar-powered designs and research projects. With faith in solar power’s ability to transform our perception of the physical world, the sprawling exhibition explores the social, political, and artistic facets of this ever-evolving technology.
In a statement, curators Rafaël Santianez and Scott Longfellow expressed that the exhibition “Soleil·s” delves into the symbolic and transformative aspects of the sun, drawing inspiration from the Solar Biennale’s vision. They added that solar design extends beyond an energy solution, urging us to reconsider our perspectives on health, politics, urban planning, and inclusivity.
Distinctive exhibits feature creations from TAKK (a Barcelona-based studio), ecologicStudio (London’s design lab), and mischer’traxler studio (hailing from Vienna). TAKK presented its glowing installation, Fellaria’s Time Capsule, resembling a lofty pod similar to a spacecraft. This artwork scrutinizes the possible consequences on biodiversity that the melting glaciers in northern Italian Lombardy could have on the local environment.

As a forward-thinking gamer peering into the future, I envision a time when cityscapes merge with living systems in an intriguing fusion. In this world, ecologicStudio, alongside the Synthetic Landscape Lab, brings forth “CryoflorE: Urban Gardening in the Digital Age.” This innovative concept envisions architectural structures harnessing renewable energy through algae and cyanobacteria.
Meanwhile, mischer’traxler studio unveils a captivating solar-powered machine that produces one piece of furniture daily. The design of each unique piece is not left to human whim, but is instead digitally decided based on the real-time weather and sunlight conditions. This intricate relationship mirrors the organic growth pattern of trees, bringing nature into our urban landscapes in a truly mesmerizing way.
In this year’s version of their project, the Solar Movement co-founders Marjan van Aubel and Pauline van Dongen expressed excitement about passing on the responsibility for the second Solar Biennale to mudac, a prominent institution at the crossroads of design and intellectual discourse. The Solar Movement aims to unite people worldwide across various disciplines, and it’s fascinating to observe how a fresh context and new team tackle it. Each edition brings forth innovative viewpoints, emerging voices, and unconventional themes that broaden our collective vision for a solar-powered future, as stated by them.
The Solar Biennale plays a significant role in the design industry by linking social, ecological, and aesthetic aspects, harmonizing these domains with innovative and practical technologies. As environmental problems persistently escalate worldwide, there’s a growing emphasis on a comprehensive approach to creation within design and fashion that acknowledges the intersections of various global challenges.
