The Shocking Return of Greg Hunt: What It Means for The White Lotus Season 3!

This article contains plot details from both seasons 2 and 3 of The White Lotus, so read at your own risk. But don’t worry if you haven’t watched yet – it’s a great opportunity to get caught up!

Since the first episode of The White Lotus Season 3 was announced on the 2025 TV schedule over the weekend, there’s been one scene that’s stuck in my mind: The reappearance of Jon Grie as Greg Hunt. At first, I didn’t recognize him as the husband of Jennifer Coolidge’s character Tanya (given that Season 2 ended in 2022), but upon recognition, I felt compelled to delve into his character background. I’m glad I did, as it has already sparked several theories and expectations for the upcoming season.

When Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya, passed away during Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” we added it to our list of the most jaw-dropping TV deaths of the year. Even with time passing, I still find myself in disbelief that creator Mike White had the audacity to write off such a memorable personality! It was truly a bold move. Though I’m already feeling the absence of Tanya, I believe the reappearance of Greg might provide some resolution from Season 2. Let’s discuss it.

When I Looked Back At His Season 1 Introduction, Greg Was Shady From The Beginning

To provide a quick recap, Jon Gries’ character Greg Hunt was introduced in The White Lotus during Season 1, Episode 4. This was at the Maui resort where Tanya had come to scatter her mother’s ashes in the sea. Their first encounter occurred when Greg tried unsuccessfully to open a room with his key. Upon arrival, Tanya informed him that he was attempting to enter her room instead of his own. At first glance, this encounter might have seemed like a romantic meet-cute, but upon reevaluation, it could also be perceived as a clever setup to meet Tanya and establish a connection for potential deceitful purposes.

Shortly following their initial encounter, he proposes a dinner date, which causes Tanya to reschedule a previously arranged dinner with Belinda. Upon their actual dinner together, Greg appears uncomfortable and unenthusiastic. However, they ultimately find common ground. Tanya is vulnerable due to her emotional state, having recently lost her mother, and she tends to be overly dependent. Just before the trip concludes, he informally warns Tanya about his health concerns, hinting at a potential early demise.

What caught my attention is how Tanya confided in Greg about undergoing various treatments throughout the years and expressed her desire to experience death as a final, immersive adventure. Given that Tanya sustained a head injury and Greg was implicated, I’m curious if he might have interpreted this as an opportunity to eliminate her for some additional payment?

He Definitely Hired The Murderous Gays To Kill Tanya In Season 2

This takes us to Season 2 where we rejoin Tanya and Greg, who are married now but appear to have issues during their vacation in Sicily. From the start, Greg shows signs of irritation towards Tanya’s assistant, Portia (played by Haley Lu Richardson), as she accompanies them on this trip. He also seems discontented in their marriage, frequently withdrawing for private phone calls and hinting at secretive activities like “she doesn’t suspect a thing.” Unexpectedly, he claims he must return to Colorado urgently to handle business matters while Tanya is enjoying the company of a group of sophisticated gay men.

The events unfold to a pivotal scene where Tanya suspects, “These men seem intent on killing me,” during their time aboard a yacht with them. Tragically, this prediction proves true as she loses her life soon afterward. This incident follows closely after she discovers an old photograph of Greg alongside Quentin, the ringleader. Portia had warned her earlier by phone, sensing danger was imminent. Tanya begins to connect the dots, understanding that his need for her death would secure his access to her wealth, and he did pressure them into traveling to Sicily.

I’m Worried About Belinda And Chloe, But I Think There Could Be A Twist

Given that we’ve learned both Greg and Belinda will appear in Season 3, it seems like only a matter of time before certain relationships are revealed. At present, we understand that Greg is accompanied by his new partner, Chloe (played by Charlotte Le Bon), who shares a bond with Aimee Lou Wood over their shared grumpy, affluent, balding boyfriends. Given Greg’s ability to vacation at another White Lotus resort in Thailand without legal trouble or being turned into a sausage, as Coolidge might desire for the character, it’s plausible he managed to escape any consequences.

Is it possible that Greg is using Chloe as just another “mark,” or could he genuinely be dating someone he cares for? Additionally, considering his newfound wealth, it wouldn’t surprise me if the dynamics were reversed, with Chloe potentially dating people for their money. I certainly hope this season concludes with Greg receiving what he deserves – at the very least, that would be satisfying!

And, I Wonder If Season 3 Will Tie Up Another Season 2 Loose End

During my thorough examination of Greg, an unresolved issue from Season 2 resurfaced. Portia, Tanya’s assistant, seemed to have a premonition about Tanya’s demise, and unfortunately, that prediction came true. This leads me to question if Greg was aware of Portia’s suspicions, or if she reported them to the authorities. With such a compelling plot point left hanging, I can’t help but hope that Season 3 addresses this issue, as it would be a shame to overlook its potential impact (in my view).

In the third season’s premiere, there seems to be a hint of gunshots happening, leaving me curious about whether Greg might be involved in some way. Let’s wait and find out as the story progresses every Sunday, only on HBO and Max.
