In simpler terms, the climax of Season 3 saw some significant developments. The secret Rand shared with the Aiel clans sparked a turning point that caused turmoil among all main characters, as they navigated their individual paths. There was a lot happening between Rand and the Aiel, but unfortunately, the growing political tension between Rand and the Shaido Clan, led by Couladin, was summarized briefly in the storyline. It’s worth noting that Couladin isn’t only a powerful military leader; he is, in fact, being manipulated by his benefactor, Sevanna.
In simplified terms, it’s acceptable for adaptations to compact storylines and characters from books into a TV series, especially when maintaining pace is crucial to keeping viewers engaged. However, the inclusion and handling of Couladin and the Shaido clan in “The Wheel of Time” might need more detailed clarification to grasp why Rand encounters such hostility beyond being an outsider. The complexities within the politics of the Aiel clans, combined with their concealed past and under-the-surface manipulation by Lanfear, lay the foundation for the dramatic climax seen in season 3’s finale.
The Devious Shaido Clan Walk The Line Of Honor
- There are 12 Aiel clans in total.
- Muradin was the original clan chief of the Shaido.
Each Aiel clan boasts its unique subculture and individuality within the larger Aiel society. The Shaido, however, are notorious for their stealing and covert activities, earning them a reputation as a challenging and often antagonistic group. Their penchant for pushing boundaries adds to this perception. The Shaido is one of the largest clans, reportedly consisting of 83 septs, which are essentially smaller divisions within the clan, each bearing its own distinct name. Only seven of these septs have been named in the literature so far. Interestingly, the Shaido didn’t engage in blood feuds with the Taardad clan, an alliance Rand had forged, but they have maintained a cool distance from them over an extended period.
Rand’s exploration into Rhuidian significantly escalated the tension between the Taardad and Shaido, as Muradin, a prominent member of the Shaido, had arrived earlier. Later, Rand would encounter Muradin in a delirious state, experiencing haunting visions from his past. This ultimately led to Muradin’s demise. Unfortunately for Rand, the Shaido attributed Muradin’s death to him once he emerged safely.
Couladin’s Resistance to Rand Creates Tension
- Although the Shaido have no current blood feuds, they do not get along with the Taardad clan.
- Couladin is from the Domai sept of the Shaido Aiel.
Following Muradin’s demise, a power void persisted within the Shaido, ultimately leading Couladin to assume the role of clan chief. Notably, Couladin is a member of the Seia Doon Warrior Society, an elite group skilled in nighttime combat and navigation. This proficiency in darkness strengthens his military authority, but his ascent has been marred by the controversial nature of his participation in the Rhuidian rite of passage. In an attempt to preserve the Shaido’s influential standing among the Aiel, Couladin agrees to receive dragon markings from Lanfear, which would symbolize him as the Car’a’carn rather than Rand.
– The deceptive symbols emboldened Couladin with arrogance and assurance to challenge Rand, yet his failure to demonstrate his strength, not even daring to confront the Aiel truthfully, left him appearing foolish. Regardless of his prowess as a warrior, Couladin was primarily manipulated by Sevanna to amass more political influence among the Aiel clans. Unfortunately, she chose the wrong warrior to strengthen her position. Although her strategies didn’t succeed, it is likely that she will strive to gather allies for her cause in Season 4.
The Shaido’s Thirst For Power Topples During The Finale
- During Rand’s reveal of the Aiel’s history, the Aiel experienced what is known as “The Bleakness”, which made them go mad and flee, or go into complete denial and rejection of Rand’s truth.
- Rand’s revelation to the Aiel was that they were once people who followed the Way of the Leaf. This meant that this oath-driven culture was born out of being oath-breakers, which is unforgivable in their culture without heavy repentance.
Although Rand successfully prevented the Aiel from completely turning against him as a Car’a’carn, it didn’t imply that they wholeheartedly supported him. When Rand disclosed their oath-breaking actions to them, the Aiel were plunged into turmoil, with some aligning with Rand and others swiftly rejecting his truth, attacking him in return. From then on, the Shaido can no longer regain any influence they once held unless they submit and side with Rand and those Aiel who support his mission. One significant advantage that Rand will gain is the allegiance of Couladin’s Seia Doon warriors, who will eventually vow to eliminate Couladin for defying Aiel tradition by assuming the role of Car’a’carn.
As I stood there, witnessing the miraculous display of power that Rand demonstrated by making it rain in the barren desert, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of impending change in the political and ideological landscape of the Aiel clans. This shifting tide will undoubtedly unfold in season 4, as Rand strives to rally all the Aiel to his cause and eliminate those who stand against him.
While Rand’s revelation to the Aiel was an essential step towards enlightening them about their past and future, it came at a heavy cost. The tragic consequences of his actions weigh heavily on him, and as more blood is shed, the temptation to wield the One Power grows stronger – a temptation that could unleash a torrent of emotions as the intricacies between the Aiel clans become increasingly convoluted.
