As a long-time connoisseur of animated comedy, I must say that this latest switcheroo between “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” has left me reeling like a fish out of water! For years, these two titans have stood side by side, each with their unique charm and wit, but now it seems the winds of change are blowing them in different directions.
It’s hard to imagine Sunday nights without “The Simpsons,” but alas, the future remains unclear for Springfield’s first family. On the other hand, I’ve always found “Family Guy” a bit too chaotic for my taste – like a bowl of jellybeans with way too many black ones! But who am I to judge? The fans have spoken, and it seems they’re eagerly awaiting Peter Griffin’s return.
In the grand scheme of things, this shift feels akin to swapping out the peanut butter for the jelly in a PB&J sandwich – not ideal, but perhaps not the end of the world either. I can only hope that these changes will breathe new life into both series and provide us with many more laughs in the years to come.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time for a nice, relaxing bath with a side of Quahog… or Springfield, depending on which show makes its grand return first! And remember, life is like a box of chocolates – sometimes you get the peanut butter, and other times, you get the jelly. Or something like that!
For quite some time, shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons have been mainstays of Fox’s Animation Domination block. However, the recent return of Family Guy in February has undergone a significant transformation – an unexpected swap has occurred. Instead of moving to a Wednesday evening slot as initially anticipated, Family Guy will now replace The Simpsons in its original timeslot. This shift follows several changes that took place in 2024.
In the past year, both The Simpsons and Family Guy celebrated significant anniversaries that seemed unlikely a few decades ago. The Simpsons marked its 35th year, while Family Guy, despite multiple cancellations, reached its 25th anniversary. However, plans for Seth MacFarlane’s adult animation to air on Wednesday nights in the upcoming season seem to have shifted once more. Now, it looks like the Season 23 premiere will be on a different day.
As a lifelong fan of animated sitcoms, I was utterly floored by Fox’s recent announcement at their preview event. Growing up, my Sundays were never complete without tuning into “The Simpsons,” a show that has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. However, it looks like our beloved Springfield family is being moved out of the Sunday night slot, making way for the return of “Family Guy.”
What’s more intriguing is that the return date for “The Simpsons” remains a mystery at this point. It’s hard to imagine Sundays without the antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The absence of “Bob’s Burgers” on the schedule also leaves me questioning what Fox has in store for us fans.
That being said, I am excited to see “Family Guy” make a comeback, as it’s been a while since we last saw Peter, Lois, Stewie, and Brian. The upcoming animation block will feature “Grimsburg” Season 2, “The Great North” Season 5, and “Krapopolis” Season 2, which is an interesting lineup to say the least. I’m curious to see how these shows compare to the ones we’ve grown accustomed to watching on Sundays.
All in all, I have mixed feelings about this new schedule, but I remain optimistic that Fox will continue to bring us quality animated content and eventually give us a date for “The Simpsons” return.
Have ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy’ Run Their Course?
Over a long period, popular TV shows often encounter a slump in viewership and public opinion, leading some to suggest they should end their run. Despite being canceled and revived multiple times throughout its 25-year span, Family Guy has faced such criticism. Similarly, The Simpsons has been labeled as “tired” on numerous occasions. Nevertheless, neither show seems ready for a finale at the moment.
A while back, Fox CEO Rob Wade expressed concerns over the shift in the airing schedule of “Family Guy”. Primarily, these changes to the show’s fall schedule were due to viewing the schedule from a more contemporary perspective. Instead of focusing solely on the conventional time slots for programs, they now consider the entire collection of shows and take into account their partnership with streaming service Hulu, aiming to optimize content for them. Over the years, scheduling practices have evolved, and today, they are approached in a different, more comprehensive manner.
Regarding “The Simpsons,” this iconic series is set to achieve an astonishing feat by airing its 800th episode in its 36th season. However, the show’s producer, Al Jean, shared last year that there may be even more episodes on the horizon as he anticipates a continued run for the series.
This year, our animators helped us produce an impressive lineup of shows that looked fantastic. However, we had to temporarily halt production for four months due to a strike, which in retrospect, was necessary. Nonetheless, I am confident that the show is thriving and I believe the current episodes are excellent, regardless of how much I personally contribute. I also have high hopes for the future as we aim to reach 800 episodes, and potentially even 1000.
For the moment, fans who are disheartened by the lack of new Simpsons episodes in the February release schedule can instead enjoy streaming all past episodes on Disney+. On the other hand, depending on your location, Family Guy episodes are available for streaming on either Hulu or Disney+.
