As a long-time Sims enthusiast who has spent countless hours creating, nurturing, and occasionally drowning my digital family in ladder-less pools, I couldn’t be more thrilled about The Sims movie being officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios!
Get ready to see fully-grown individuals find themselves in tricky situations without ladders in swimming pools, as it has been officially announced that the movie adaptation of the popular video game, “The Sims,” is underway at Amazon MGM Studios. According to Variety, this film will be a faithful representation of the “The Sims” universe, packed with numerous references to the rich lore of the cherished gaming franchise. Kate Herron (Loki) has been assigned as the director for the project, and she is also collaborating with Briony Redman on the script. The success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is said to have inspired this project significantly, as Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is also involved in bringing “The Sims” to life.
The plot specifics for the upcoming “The Sims” movie have yet to be confirmed or disclosed, since the project is still in its early stages. There has been much anticipation among fans about this long-rumored production finally moving forward. It will be intriguing to observe how director Herron tackles the movie adaptation, considering that “The Sims” is renowned for being a storyless, open-ended game where players control their Sims’ lives without a predefined narrative.
As we draw near to the remarkable achievement of 25 years with The Sims, a significant milestone in today’s fast-paced world of entertainment and pop culture, I am elated to share that The Sims is set to make its debut on the big screen,” said Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment. This announcement was made alongside other updates for The Sims franchise, such as the news that The Sims 5 release will not happen anytime in the near future. Kate Gorman, EA Vice President, provided some insights into what fans can anticipate from the film, stating:
“What I will tell you is it’s very much rooted in The Sims universe. What we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release.”
The Sims Movie Will Feature Tons of Easter Eggs
In gaming, few fan bases are as devoted as those who play The Sims, with countless players engrossed in this popular life-simulator at any given time. As players create their own families and pursue careers within the game, it’s hard to resist pulling a trick or two. One such prank is the infamous ladderless swimming pool, where Sim characters drown due to their inability to climb out – a humorous Easter egg that will feature in the upcoming movie. Moreover, the beloved Freezer Bunny character will grace the big screen for the first time in this film. Gorman elaborated:
In this space, we’re planning to introduce an imaginative concept called ‘Freezer Bunnies.’ Although the specifics like the pool design without a ladder are still under discussion, the essence is to symbolize the playfulness and creativity that The Sims community has showcased over the past 25 years.
Inhabitants of the Sims universe communicate in a unique language called Simlish. Initially, enthusiasts advocated for the film to be scripted solely in Simlish, with English captions as an option. Remarkably, Gorman hasn’t dismissed this idea entirely; instead, he finds it intriguing and something they will certainly discuss. In other words, there’s a possibility that the movie could feature Simlish dialogue!
