‘The Son Of A B---- Didn’t Say Anything To Me’: Jeremy Renner Reacts To Avengers Co-Star Robert Downey Jr. Being Cast As Doctor Doom

As a longtime Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of the MCU from its humble beginnings to the juggernaut it is today, I must say that Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom is nothing short of electrifying! Despite the initial shock and slight disappointment that Tony Stark won’t be gracing our screens again, the thought of Downey stepping into the sinister boots of Victor Von Doom has me more than intrigued.

Among all the Marvel movie updates shared at San Diego Comic-Con recently, it’s clear that the most noteworthy was the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Instead of resurrecting Tony Stark/Iron Man, he will take on the role of Doctor Doom, a choice that has elicited diverse opinions among fans. Despite this divide, credit is due to Downey for maintaining secrecy about his new role until Marvel’s Hall H panel, as even Jeremy Renner, his Avengers colleague, was unaware of the news prior to its announcement.

Jeremy Renner, who debuted as Clint Barton/Hawkeye alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in “The Avengers” back in 2012, shared his thoughts on a surprising development during an interview with Us Weekly. Similar to many others, Renner found out about Downey’s role as Doctor Doom from online news reports. In his own words:

I was completely taken aback. This close friend of mine never mentioned a thing to me, yet we’re quite friendly. There’s our shared group chat for the Avengers team, the original six members. He kept silent all this time. I logged on and bombarded his phone with messages like, “What’s the deal? You’ve been keeping this secret from us the entire time?” It’s thrilling news. I’m genuinely, extremely excited about it.

For quite some time, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo have been more than just work colleagues; they’ve maintained a close bond off-set, much like a family. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Downey didn’t initially involve these five in his upcoming role as Doctor Doom, which reportedly upset Renner. This likely stemmed from the strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that Marvel Studios had Downey sign, rather than any intention to keep his co-stars in the dark. Given Marvel’s reputation for maintaining secrecy, this isn’t surprising news to those who follow the MCU news closely.

Personally speaking, I can’t hide my excitement as I eagerly await Jeremy Renner’s take on Doctor Doom in the upcoming films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Though he’s primarily recognized as the Fantastic Four’s sworn enemy, Doctor Doom has a storied history of going toe-to-toe with a multitude of Marvel heroes. With his recent promotion to the main antagonist in these upcoming movies, Doom steps into the spotlight following Jonathan Majors’ departure last December, leaving the role of Kang the Conqueror vacant.

According to reports, Robert Downey Jr.’s demand for playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Marvel movies was that Joe and Anthony Russo direct the next two Avengers films. Similar to Downey, the Russo brothers have not worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Now, these three are preparing to bring some changes for the final releases of The Multiverse Saga. Unofficially, the same report hinted that Downey will make his Doctor Doom debut in a mid or post-credits scene for the 2025 film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As we anticipate further updates on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, don’t forget that you can stream Jeremy Renner’s latest Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance, the Hawkeye miniseries, with a Disney+ membership. If you’d prefer to catch his performance as Mike McClusky in Mayor of Kingstown, make sure you have a Paramount+ subscription instead.
