The Squid Game Season 2 Scene That Made The Actors Sick

As a seasoned gamer who has binge-watched countless series, I can confidently say that Hwang Dong-hyuk has earned himself a spot in the “most dedicated showrunners” hall of fame. While I appreciate his commitment to creating an immersive experience for us viewers, I must admit that he pushed his cast a bit too far with the Six-Legged Pentathlon scene.

I mean, it’s one thing to have the players in the game suffer, but when the real-life actors start coughing and getting sick on set, it’s time to reconsider the level of intensity. Granted, I’ve played some intense games myself (looking at you, Dark Souls), but even those didn’t require me to actually run through a cloud of dust for two weeks straight!

However, if Hwang Dong-hyuk believes that this grueling scene serves a greater purpose in his anti-capitalist narrative, I guess it was worth the trouble. But let’s hope that in Season 3, he finds a less harmful way to make us root for each other and create a better society – maybe something as simple as a friendly game of charades or an intense round of virtual reality trivia?

Now, if only I could convince him to create a game based on my infamous session of “Candy Crush Saga”… I might have a few stories to share about the struggle!

As someone who has been involved in the creative industry myself, I must say that there have been times when I’ve pushed my team to their limits for the sake of a scene or a shot. However, after watching “Squid Game” and learning about the intense training and preparation that went into one particular scene, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator. While I don’t condone any form of physical harm or discomfort inflicted on cast members, I can understand how the pressure to deliver a groundbreaking series might have led him to push his actors to their limits. Still, it’s important to remember that there is a line between artistic ambition and putting people in danger, and I hope that he reflects on the impact of his decisions on his cast and crew moving forward.

Similar to Season 1, the Squid Game contestants encounter an abundance of twisted chaos, with the “Six-Legged Pentathlon” being one such challenge that proved challenging for the cast members during filming. In this game, participants are initially given 10 minutes to organize into groups of five. Once grouped, their legs are bound together. Following this, each team must travel 10 meters on a circular track before an individual from their group participates in a mini-game. The pentathlon consists of five games in total, and the players have only five minutes to successfully complete them all. Failure to do so within the time limit… well, you can probably guess what follows.

The cast found it challenging to film due to an unexpected issue: the frequent running and the large amount of gravel used on set caused dust that made breathing difficult, leading to health concerns for the actors. Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed this, noting that everyone got sick during filming, even him, and it took over two weeks to complete the scene.

The creator of Squid Game says the scene was worth the trouble

Was the investment of time in filming this specific game worthwhile, given that it ironically put the actors from “Squid Game” at risk? Perhaps, considering Hwang Dong-hyuk’s intended message. He stated, “This was the game where players encouraged each other. I believed, if we could foster more opportunities for people to uplift and encourage one another, society would improve.

As a long-time Netflix subscriber and avid binge-watcher, I must say that the recent phenomenon of “Squid Game” has left me utterly captivated. Having grown up in a working-class family, I find the anti-capitalist undertones of this show particularly resonant with my own experiences. The idea that the wealthy elite would go to such extremes to maintain their power and status is not just a fictional concept to me; it’s an all too familiar reality for many people in my community.

However, as much as I appreciate the social commentary of “Squid Game,” what truly blew me away was its massive success on Netflix. In just four days, the show garnered an astonishing 68 million views, breaking all previous records for streaming viewership. As someone who has struggled to find representation in media that speaks to my own experiences, it’s heartening to see a show like this achieve such widespread popularity.

And it doesn’t look like “Squid Game” will be going away anytime soon – Season 3 is already filmed and set to release in 2025! I can only hope that the cliffhanger ending of Episode 7 won’t leave me hanging for too long. Overall, “Squid Game” has become a must-watch for anyone who wants to explore the complexities of capitalism while enjoying an action-packed, suspenseful drama.
