The Steam Deck stands out as a high-performance gaming device, capable of running numerous robust PC titles. Moreover, it’s renowned for its exceptional abilities in game emulation, delivering excellent performance when playing classic video games.

As a devoted admirer, I must say that one of the remarkable systems Valve’s machine excels at emulating is the iconic PlayStation Portable (PSP) by Sony – a device that was always perceived as a trailblazer for its time. The Deck serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of this handheld, demonstrating how relevant it still is today. Although it may not have achieved the same level of popularity as Nintendo’s handhelds, the PSP certainly hinted at an enticing future for portable gaming that Sony unfortunately didn’t fully exploit.

With Steam Deck’s robust capabilities, this portable powerhouse can run PSP games at a threefold resolution, enhancing their visual quality beyond what was previously seen. While the original PSP delivers decent graphics, there’s often a soft, blurry effect due to aging hardware. However, with the arrival of the Deck, fans can now experience these games in their optimal form.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta exemplifies this point, given that the game appears more stunning than ever before on Valve’s platform. Previously, it was already one of the best-looking games on PSP; however, enhancing its visuals in HD brings it up to par with the graphical quality of the God of War series on PlayStation 2.

Many people found issue with the PSP due to its lack of a second analog stick, which often required developers to create unconventional control schemes for camera movement using directional buttons and an additional button press. However, the Deck’s inclusion of a second analog stick allows players to assign this control more naturally, thereby enhancing their experience when playing these games.

There’s been a revival of interest in this handheld device, with numerous re-releases and upgraded versions of its library. Games like Tactics Ogre, Crisis Core, Star Ocean 2, and others are proof that they’ve always been quality titles. Experiencing them in their original states highlights their initial greatness and how these remakes have further enhanced them.

It’s unfortunate that Sony hasn’t fully returned to their portable gaming heritage; the PlayStation Portable (PPP) essentially functions as a cloud device without any additional features. While it is an excellent cloud service capable of streaming many of its strongest games over the internet, it falls short of its potential greatness. Many fans are eagerly awaiting Sony to re-enter the handheld market, given our lingering fondness for the PS Vita and PSP.

Before that point, the Steam Deck‘s emulation functions could make it an ideal platform for enjoying these attractive and enjoyable PSP games.
